  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What have you picked and why?

Just curious to know what have the "soon to be" Scarlet owners picked. Just the brain or the package. And if package then PL or Canon mount and why?

I picked the Canon Ti mount bundle (11K). In all honesty, in the rush of the moment- war time/announcement chaos time- I talked with my bomb squad rep and only knew about the existence of PL, AL and Ti Canon mount options. Didn't know about the 14K full production package- no harm done, it was really pure chaos. In that scenario, I decided to go with the Canon Ti Mount 11K package. I went for the Ti Canon mount because its what the Epic is getting. Being a person that uses telephoto (heavy) lenses a lot, I wanted the best and most robust mount to go with my camera. The 1K price increase seemed fair enough to pay for this added security... However, side handles, batteries, ssd's I'll have to order separately.... Such is life. (Good thing I separately ordered the Side Handle a month ago. I think this will not make me wait a lot for at least one of the essential pieces to handle it...)

Is there no chance of modifying our Scarlet option. Even for once and within 24 hours? Isn't PL mount more robust than the Canon mount?

PL is more robust but you need PL lenses. They are a lot more expensive. So it's more about what lenses you're buying or renting than anything else.

14k package, plus 2 redvolts, plus 2 chargers, plus 1 ssd 64gb, plus a redvolts pack case. Al canon mount.
The perfect camera.

Also got the 14k package with Canon mount. I'll likely pickup the PL mount later. May need another mount made as well. I do a lot of lens related tests for people. I'm planning on purchasing a 128 gig card or a couple more 64s. I'd like to have at least 2 hours of recording time at my disposal between media and power. A few extra batteries. Kinda waiting on that 4 RedVolt thing (can't remember the name for the life of me) as well.

I picked just the brain and the Canon AI mount. Already have some goodies from my Epic M. :-) Gonna make an incredible B cam.

I bought the basic Brain/SSD/Canon Al mount. Have had the BOMB for months and am not a fan of viewing with LCDs. Ordered the side handle too.
Most of the rest of the kit will be a cobble of bits/plates/cables/batteries/hardware from a variety of sources, some of which might even be RED.
I plan to -hopefully- use something like the PIX 240 recorder as my primary media for the near future since a useable number of RED SSDs is just too prohibitive to my cash flow and client needs.

-and of course a small selection of 3-ish Canon or Canon mount zooms to cover my 11-200mm focal needs...

I did the 14K package, but already have a 128 Card and RED station. Also ordered 4 extra RV's and a travel charger. I kept my 50mm 1.4 Canon lens. Picking up a 70-200 2.8 IS and a 24-70 2.8 IS.
Great lenses, Jeffrey! You will love them.

Our company has been saving for a camera package for some time so we invested money in quite a few different things for the kit. We snagged the 14k kit for starters and bought a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens from a camera store here in Toronto to compliment our Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. We also picked up some other kit from Red and other sources (Wooden Camera has some great stuff from the looks of it and based on what I've heard from others).

The only things that I'd really like to get from here in the short/mid-term are some fast primes, a PL mount (to open up the option of renting PL glass from time-to-time or possibly investing in some Red Pro Primes in the future) and a Mattebox. We have a follow focus and some 15mm rods already from Redrock Micro. Does anyone have any experience with their micro Mattebox?

Jeffrey, 24-70 IS? Not from Canon, i assume. The 24-70L Canon lens does not have IS. If you want IS you should get the 24-105 IS. Its f4 but the IS is excellent...

14k set. Hope it's possible to add a few things to it at a later date. I'm like a few others, in the moment, placed order without thinking through too much.

Question if anyone knows the answer - the Scarlet-X will require some sort of mounting plate to hook up to a tripod, yes?

We went with the Mounting Plate (Epic) (which has a check mark in the "Scarlet" box along with the "Epic" one) and the DSMC Quick Release Platform Pack. As I understand it you can hook up to a tripod out of the box because there are sever screw holes for a tripod plate along the bottom of the camera, but the quick release system looks pretty great and since we wanted something to hook up our rods it made sense to pick it up.

Patents for new 24-70 have been in place for some time. Natural disaster and typical Canon caution have delayed a lens that some executive probably took on vacation. IS for sure, hopefully better optics, maybe even a "c" version w/ longer focus throw and higher price point...

...after finding the Zeiss for Contax primes, I can never go back.

Oops my mistake there. I meant the non IS version, my mistake...long day editing.

Also as a side note. I'll be selling the 64GB card that comes in my 14K kit, if anyone wants to claim it before it ships. I am already set for media. Also selling the 1.8 RED station. As I'm set there as well.

Thanks Nick.

I'm hoping at some point they make an aluminum PL mount. I'd love to pick up some of the Battle Tested RED lenses :)

The more I look around at comparable primes for Canon EF mounts, the more those Red Pro Primes with a Titanium PL Mount start to look very reasonable indeed. I mean, compare their prices with those Zeiss CP.2 primes. Better yet compare the Zeiss zoom lens that sells for $30k that is based on the same technology with the 17-50mm T2.9 zoom that sells for $6,000. That is just ridiculous.

Agreed.
