Keep digging. You're showing your immaturity with every post, Timothy. Get over yourself. (Unfortunately that ability doesn't kick in until about age 25...)

To be fair, your not exactly covering yourself with glory here either Trevor.

I obviously don't "know" the answer to your question Tim, but I would suggest reliability would be the main reason with no other reason required. RED has had enough reliability concerns raised over the years, the cost of RED media seems expensive, and if an SSD, means even a 1% better chance of not losing a critical shots at some point, I would (and have) very gladly paid. And if I was RED, I would absolutely want only the most reliable platform possible.

As to the thread... I appreciate your statement that what has happened to the CF concept as in "axed" while for all money seems accurate, does not answer "why" And I don't see how there's any harm in asking such a question, there are so many idle wonderings and speculative questions on RU. In terms of responses... I really don't think you've ever intended to stir up anything at all, and you like to stand up for yourself, I think that's good, I'd humbly just suggest that whenever I know I encounter a recurring problem, I look to change my approach. As as they say, communication is the response you get. Even then, if you think an answers a bit curt or dismissive or someones just being a dick.... unless you think it's a really important battle that needs to be fought, don't worry about it mate, life really is too short.

Best

Lliam

Bravo for Louis CK. No one could have summed this all up better!HA!

You ALL have made my day, started it with a GREAT laugh!
THANKS!

I LOVE Red Forum!!!!

I assume Red AXED the CF option because it was not PROFESSIONAL enough, and as you know
they ONLY make pro gear.

Here is a young person - interested in things RED - and they get maligned out of the starting gate when on a quest for answers. Instant hostility - and you could not let go...
Yes, he was directed to calling his BS rep (if indeed he has one) but only after how many spears were thrown at them for asking the question more than once when he did not feel it was understood.

Come on guys, being abusive from the start just because someone is young is just plain wrong. If you think it's a silly inquiry - simple action on your part - move on to reading the next thread.

REDUser is a place that should exhibit our professionalism to the world - a place where people can come for answers and be treated with dignity and respect.
Unfortunately, this thread is not a shining example - perhaps the mods will delete it only in fairness to those that care how we are perceived to others.

Seems to me that the culture at RED HQ is to encourage those younger to learn, to inquire, to ask questions - any of you heard about Camp RED?

As far as CF cards, there was some discussion about speed, capacity and reaching the limit of cost per MB being efficient. I remember the thread but have too much editing to do today to search for it.
So it became a simple business decision - continue moving R&D&M money into a technology that had defined limits - or - continue moving towards technologies that had the potential for expansion. And indeed, that is what has happened with SSD - note the announcements on the higher speed 256's that will be coming out.
Trying to do that with a CF, either not possible or cost prohibitive.

That said, there is still a possible future with CF cards. After all, they are still for sale in the RED Store.

There was talk of a SSD to CF adapter that could be used for several applications.

1. Firmware - Keep the latest builds on a CF card. Using a SSD - CF adapter means that you do not need to dedicate a SSD. A CF card with builds would never get mixed up with a SSD being used to capture footage. While the announced 32GB cards will be useful for this, they would require a SSD station in the field if something needed to be downloaded. Those are proprietary - standard CF readers are everywhere - handy in an emergency - say sending a Log file to RED on a documentary where its run and gun (no DIT station).

2. DSMC - RED has a wonderful future with high end still photographers. Not all are, or want to be motion capture. Their workflow is CF cards for the most part. Their current cameras, card readers - everything centers around CF. New workflows, new hardware can be disruptive - being able to use a CF card on a RED EPIC or Scarlet in still mode sure would go a long way for those that capture images one at a time.

Peace.

Actually, I would be concerned with any adult that engages in an ongoing dialog online with a minor - what is your fascination?

Very well stated...

Brian, I agree with everything you said in your post, both in your thoughts about the application of CF cards, and in the spirit its delivered.
But this line is to far. And I respectfully request you edit it out. Even if you're intention is not how I read it, you're straying into a suggestion of something that is pretty inappropriate.

Acknowledged - some could misconstrue the intent. Now edited out of the original post.

This has to be one of the most absurd and outright stupid threads I've come across on RED USER. WTF, people??? So I'm going to make a few points before I shut it down for good. I probably should delete this whole mess, but perhaps its better for the thread to stand as an example to others of how not to behave around here.

First of all, Timothy asked a valid question. And yet no one in this entire thread, totaling 68 posts before mine, bothered to give him a valid answer. There were a few incorrect answers given, which is sad, because it has been stated multiple times in the past how the CF card program met its end. Of course, RED never divulged specifics, but the CF card program was axed because at this point it's a legacy format, lacked the desired performance for the interface, was not progressing as they had hoped, yadda, yadda, yadda.... The REDMAG SSD program gives RED the opportunity to maintain greater control over the camera media and provide options with much greater capacity and performance. CF and smaller, more mainstream memory card products, have not progressed as fast as RED, and many of us as well, would have hoped. RED had 32GB CF cards in development, we're not sure which stage of development as none ever materialized, but they pulled the plug on that program as the EPIC developed and CF was proving inadequate, the REDMAG SSDs were also developing at a faster rate than originally anticipated. These are all reasons stated, mostly by Jarred, but also by other RED Team members.

To put it bluntly, if you don't know the answer to someone's question there are two professional choices. 1> Just don't respond. 2> Say you don't know and move on. Just because you don't know, doesn't mean there isn't a better answer. Nor does it mean that someone is wrong for wanting a more detailed explanation, regardless of their age. So Trevor, would you still have proceeded the same way with this thread had it been someone else asking the question? Someone who you knew to be 45 years old, perhaps? Yes, I'm singling you out in public on this one. You can feel free to respond via PM if you wish, I really don't care.

Second point of order. The younger members of these forums often take a beating. This thread shows some of that. I've seen it time and time again where younger members are treated with little respect and many of those giving them a hard time are often the same small group of people. We have a dozen or so habitual offenders when it comes to blatant age discrimination and yes, here and there people have been banned for it. I probably should be swinging the ban-hammer right now. Many younger members have been chased off these forums, some of them still lurk, but a lot of them have lost the desire or interest to post because of other douchebag members that feel the need to attack or hinder their learning process. For some people it seems that physical age is a qualifier of intelligence and professionalism or even a parameter by which to offer mutual respect and knowledge.

If it isn't obvious by this point, I'll let you all know I take this quite personally. I've been there most of my life, fighting unwarranted age discrimination, having formed my first real (and profitable) company when I was 14. I still battled the age factor into my early 30's, as I looked a bit younger than I was (until recently) and all too often I ran across people who still felt I was just too young to be doing what I was doing. Whatever...
