  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What Happens when a Rookie Pilot tries to fly an Oktocopter with a Camera

Thanks for everyone's insight.

I see this as a cautionary tale.

Clearly I should only hire a vetted, professional pilot (team) with a reel and credentials.

This is just something to show anyone who thinks that it is easy, should be cheap, or that any low budget project "NEEDS" an RC Helicopter, but Can't AFFORD a Vetted Team of Profesionals.

This guy had the balls to say it would be better than setting up an extending crane with hot-head. Wrong Mentality - I actually enjoyed watching him crash because he was such a pompous ass about the whole thing. Did I mention he planned on doing it cheaper than a crane+operators?

The CHEAP way is usually not the RIGHT way. This ended relatively well considering it didn't hit a human being or animal.

The Moral is "BE SMART, BE SAFE"

I personally do not like the "Be smart, Be safe" way of doing things. "No guts no glory" is much more appealing to me. Film productions can be so overprotected sometimes so it's stupid. We did a shoot once where a Line producer all of a sudden told everyone that the RC helicopter could not fly over anybody's head... well that was the shot we where there for... I tried to explain to him that if the RC is 300 meters above somebody's head then thats safe if it's right next to somebody then it's quite dangerous... be he went on with his rules and everybody had to stand around really close on takeoff and landing but he refused to give us the shot with 3 actors on the ground and the camera 300 meters straight above... thats was the point when I kind of decided I get my on Freaking kopter... a few crashes later... I got my own freaking pilot.. now things are going pretty well. Learned from the mistakes, do not bring on stupid AD's or producers and be in control of who is doing what then things goes very well usually..

Here is a film from our last test flight, it was safe enough to be boring...

Really, Guy?
And what will you say to the next-of-kin of the person you kill with your "no guts no glory" mantra? Have you rehearsed that speech yet?
Cheers,
Harry

I guess when I say Smart and Safe I don't mean Cautionary to the level of "Hover-Parent"

I mean, Hire -VETTED- professionals who are capable of flying where the camera needs to be without endangering life or equipment.

Well said, Dan.
And since when is "smart and safe" a bad thing when the safety of people is to be considered?
Cheers,
Harry
