Did anyone present at the Red announcement today hear what happened to the Scarlet Fixed lens version? Is that coming after the interchangeable or has it been scrapped? Like many of us, I was hoping to get the fixed lens version rather than the interchangeable. Now that the 2/3 inch sensor has been abandoned, the zoom lens Red developed for the Scarlet fixed would be too short to be useful so I assume the model has been scrapped. Any thoughts?

Once Jim said the Scarlet was a professional camera and more expensive, I think the fixed lens idea was out.

At the event tonight Jim said they had tech issues with the fixed lens so decided to drop in favor of the interchangeable mount. Better for me since I want a fully interchangeable low cost Bcam with my Epic

Thanks Josh. The fixed lens looked great for documentary work but my hand has been forced. I've put a deposit on the Scarlet X. Can't wait!

It's a little sad. I'm sad.

Why, you have like 1000 lenses to chose from now and, at 24FPS 7:1 compression, Scarlet is identical to Epic for 30% of the cost! Fuckstick - I'm taking delivery on an Epic very soon and have no regrets since Scarlet it a perfect Bcam or insurance body for the Epic. You also have an upgrade path to Epic like performance as budget allows.

I believe this isn't the end of the fixed scarlet.

I do. Makes no sense now when you can build 2 exact models with just minor digital card and buss differences. In manufacturing economies of scale rule. Having the same basic box on both models makes it way easier to build and upgrade. This keeps the price down.

I'm sad because i definitely wanted to be part of the RED world and now the entry point changed from 7000€ (incl. taxes) to 17000€. That is outside my range.
Scarlet X is a wonderful camera at a insanely great prize. It's just not what I was hopeing for and I was not overestimating anything. I just wanted what we had talked about for years now.

The definition of prosumer is just a consumer who uses professional products.

I too miss the fixed, the 120 fps, the fast use and everything at a low price. Don't know if I can afford Scarlet now really. My primary investments go into post production, the Scarlet Fixed was supposed to be a supporting camera for my Post Production and for second unit stuff.

The only really sad thing about this announcement is that some people who wanted to work in Red's world got priced out of it, but I am a huge fan of the decision overall. S35 suits our purposes much better than 2/3" and being able to use our Canon glass on it is just the icing on the cake.

It really seems like the Scarlet-X is built to be a 3k/2k acquisition for the best 2k output going in the digital cinema realm (short of an Epic or, arguably, an Alexa). The fact that it can also do a credible job for 4k output (particularly as a starting out camera or a B-camera for an Epic) and shoot great 5k stills is an amazing cherry on top of a beautiful sundae. That is pretty much the perfect sweet spot for us.

bummed and excited

bummed and excited

My expectations for Scarlet have always been based on info. from Red, not wild speculation - so I was really really excited about the fixed lens, 3k, 120fps, $6000 camera. I had already reluctantly let go of "3k for 3k." Regardless, the "Ted" Scarlet was perfect for me - ready to buy two or three. I'm super bummed that's not what was announced. I have ordered the new Scarlet X and it will of course be incredible, but it's a totally different price point, and set of specs (some better, some not better). I'm excited and can't wait to shoot with it, but I still wish they had released the camera that Ted has been showing off for the last year.

What Red had decided on makes total sense and I'll continue to talk them up to whomever will listen. Unlike Canon - good lord what are they thinking?

It really does seem like Canon read the market poorly. Except for their glass, of course. I'm sure that many Scarlet-X owners will happily invest in some of those lovely fast primes, purpose-built for digital cinema for their Canon mount!

Dont be sad Felix, maybe there will be plenty of cheap Red Ones sooner or later, because people start to sell them as they buy new Scarlet-X instead of that.
The lovely old small Scarlet is dead for long time and the new Scarlet-X is rather like Red Two or Basic Epic.

But have someone heard anything official from Red about the fixed? Is it confirmed that they dropped it?

I would also love the fixed, especially because of the fast use!

What's to stop RED from spinning off another company and offering prosumer cameras? Clearly there's a market for something like this.

DTTO, but we don't want a prosumer camera. I want to get rid of that shitty prosumer picture quality which is all around us. I cant stand all that noise, moire and lack of colors and details etc. No, I just want perfect picture. I can live without most bells and whistels, HDRs, etc, but not without perfect pictures and maybe variable fps.

Everybody loved former concept of Scarlet because from the very first time Tim was talking about a professional camera and not about a prosumer one.

i think its gone with the wind ... :(
