  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What does this mean?

It will only take a few months, not a few years. Scarlet and Epic will share many common components within and between each model line. We should be seeing working production prototypes of S35 and 2/3" platforms by late summer/early fall latest and they should be in production by the end of 2009 or 1st quarter 2010. 2 sensors, 2 levels of processing, common mechanical components. 1 year from the last December announcement date to first production run is not unreasonable. Monstro was originally announced for 2010 anyway so no real change there.
Of course if the world economy totally falls off a cliff between now and then all bets are off. But that is the only thing that will hold RED back. They can make the product.

I can't wait to have Scarlet in my hands. The possibilities are endless. But, we got no choice but to wait.

The question is: Can they shrink it and become Scarlet? 'Cause that is basically what everybody is waiting for.
you're fairly nuts caballero.. count on it.. sure it is.. scarlet is the red1 everybody is waiting for :) or should we say?.. everybody was.. :) has been waiting for? :) :ninja:

Been a lurker.I am now in.Had a look at the 5D,GH1,D90.Glad I have held out so I can spend time saving for a DSMC.Cannot wait to use a truly versatile tool even with the delays.Good luck to the team.:sarcasm:

In all honestly the modular nature of the camera, and the diversity of sensor sizes and types is the saving grace of the camera. I really don't see how in todays climate RED would even be able to offer one camera (especially the one offered at the beginning) without the variety of sensors to fit all projects styles and types. The brain is the selling point and then all the accessories fit all keeping general cost on accessories down.

It was and is the smartest move RED have made since deciding to make cameras in the first place. And suits me down to the ground...more than I could have dreamed of!!

Put your helmets on. Expect difficult times for a couple of years. And please don't ask us to ignore the drama that has hit everyone worldwide. It just doesn't make good business sense.

Jim

Jim! Great job on the red! its the biggest revolution in cinema of recent!!

However, statics show that during recession / great depression, among the things that increased: CHURCH ATTENDANCE & MOVIE ATTENDANCE; reason being that in the midst of hopelessness, people always seek an alternative or some short term / long term escape from all that is around, moreover a lot of the big business in U.S. were birthed/blossomed in those times because the "norms" weren't working, all I see around are release dates for other cameras whose quality cant match the reds, you guys need not push the date further because you never know; the same way the RED phenomena kicked in is the same way competitors are working tirelessly to kick you guys out! I am looking forward to purchase a lot of scarlets and an epic , so please the only thing that needs to be pushed forward is DELAY!

Peace & God Bless

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this post!
I am now officially never buying a RED camera, whether it be a Scarlet/ whatever.
If you're really paying attention to the camera market, which I have been, they prices ARE NOT Fluctuating a bit!!!!
(if there is change, They are going up, and people are still for some reason buying):violent:

After 9/11 the whole world has been in the crapper, and will NEVER heal!! EVER!
Once you understand that things ARE NOT going to get better, and you have to move on, maybe we can make some progress. But, until then, I guess all that red can do is stall, and throw blame.
Scarlet was my dream camera, and that's where it will stay.

:head_explode:
Red

Economies will suck, and this sure isn't helping anything.
IF people were really going to by a Scarlet/Epic in the first place they'd buy it.... I'd buy it.
I just refuse to wait on something that isn't going to happen. There will be changes to scarlet for years trying to keep up with Canon/sony/panasonic/nikon/whoever, but your going to have to put your foot down and make a damn camera! You can keep making a "perfect do-all camera" on paper but in reality, someone will out do it. Just like computers.

I officially call red's bluff. Scarlet.
:couch:

Thanks for stopping by, Justin... I'm glad you pay attention to the camera market and are on top of RED's bluff... GFY (Good For You).

Justin,

Is this your farewell message?

Too bad, 4 posts, it seemed you were Just in...

Pull the emergency brake on Epic, people with R1 are good right now Epic is over kill right now anyway. You (Jim) know the numbers better than me but I cant see that there isnt a sub $8,000 market. Like an earlier post said there are new offering from other manufacturers and the reality is Sony is the only one with a non tape based recorder ) except the expensive P2, well there's that HPX170, but the point is fixed Scarlet is much better and way cheaper so I can't see there not being a market.

Personally this is killing me even though I realize there is a bigger picture :(

I was suppose to have an image in National Geographic last January. The story was cancealled so they did not use the picture. I was so excited. The economy was the blame. Now I have a puplishing company that used several of my aurora images in a book. Well guess what..... they do not have enough sells to pay me along with 20 other photographers. It is hard to justify going out and upgrading equipment when no one wants or can pay you for you work.

I am amazed that Jim at RED continues his efforts. He and his staff are amazing and setting the standards way beyound any thing else. Dispite the economy I have been sitting back saving money so when the new stuff from RED is ready, I will be ready.

Jim went out on a limb just as many of us will need to. The RED Team I believe is not motivated by money in the sense they will bail out because things are tough. They appear to be driven by a dream, a personel pride that has changed the whole industry. It is unfortunate that the world situation is not at it's best.

I give thanks to RED for sticking it out. Bigger companies have folded left and right.

Best Wishes RED

I look forward to your success

Pull the emergency brake on Epic, people with R1 are good right now Epic is over kill right now anyway. :(

i know this thread was started in february, but i agree with this notion that if it comes down to making a choice waiting for epic isn't quite as bad as waiting for scarlet. Because if someone is truely waiting for epic they could buy a red one right now and upgrade to the epic as soon as its released at no cost to themselves. While those of us waiting for a scarlet dont nessicarily have the money to buy a red one and therefor have no means of holding us over until the release. I don't know how things are run over there and whether this is even a pheasible idea, but I feel as though if it comes down to a choice between pushing back epic, pushing back scarlet, or pushing back both, it would be nice to delay the epic over the scarlet. just my 2 cents.

Peter, I would doubt that the development of Epic & Scarlet are totally separate -- and for Red, the Epic is probably as essential financially as the Scarlet and propels them into the higher end production arena. No big deal, but the notion about buying a Red now and upgrading at no cost to themselves is mistaken -- the trade-in upgrade costs (approximately 11K) and so do various Red1-centric accessories to make the Red 1 useable.

As wise earlier voices said: patience, breathe.

And remind yourself, the camera does not make the artist.

And there are tools (including a lot of available Red 1s that aren't always working) that can put your vision on a screen available now. And if you need to "practice", experiment, get your sea legs -- there are lots of good tools out there at very modest prices.

Rob, I understand that scarlet and epic are largely worked on side by side. all i was saying in my post is that if it comes down to delaying one or the other I feel it would be a better choice to delay the epic because the red one is available. I'm sure there is a cost involved with buying a red one and then trading it back to red, but that is something that is their own policy, and if it can sell more cameras then why not?

furthermore, i know the camera doesn't make the artist, but you try making a film without a camera and tell me how it goes. The scarlet for a lot of users is going to be our FIRST camera. As such each delay in the Scarlet's release date is essentially putting our creativity on hold until we can get it.

Right now i'm working on my first screenplay, Now i am not nessicarrilly looking to bring it into production any time soon, but if i had my camera now I could be scouting possible future locations and just famliarizing myself with red workflow.

So to recap what my post was essentially saying is that there are more people waiting for the scarlet that may not have other means to hold them over, while that is not as much the case with the epic.

After 9/11 the whole world has been in the crapper, and will NEVER heal!! EVER!
Once you understand that things ARE NOT going to get better, and you have to move on, maybe we can make some progress.

I'm not going to start a rant about this, although if someone could take the time to explain the relation of 9/11 and the current economic situation to me (perhaps via PM), I'd be grateful.

As for Jims/REDs decision: Only way to go. R&D work is costly enough as it is, and while the large estimated sales of smaller EPIC/Scarlet cameras will generate a lot of income, RED needs to be able to sell the entire range of products they are developing in order for the currently planned lineup to make sense, financially. Now, with sales dropping (and whatever you may have found out about the US market, Justin, in Europe they definitely are, with prices, both retail and rental, tumbling accordingly), they have no other choice but to minimize their cost factors, and for my part, I'd much rather live with 1-2 months (heck, I could even live with 6) delay in their schedule than see RED get into financial trouble and having to call of the Scarlet/EPIC programme altogether.

So, thanks for the info, Jim - most companies wouldn't bother announcing such a delay in a way that actually invited feedback - and see you late 09/early 10 (my guess). Still along for the ride, and still going to get Scarlet ASAP.
