  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What does this mean?

Keeping RED going for the long term is more important than getting a camera in my hands a bit earlier. When the Scarlet's do finally arrive on the scene, I'll be ready and waiting though. Thanks for all your hard work on such awesome cameras! It's a film geek's dream machine.

For everyone waiting to buy a scarlet, if you really need to start production then rent a red camera for a test day (there are rumors of them going out for $250 - $300 a day). Shoot all your tests and then when you're ready to roll out your production, rent the camera again. With so many red ones (and other cameras) you shouldn't be held back hardly at all. Red owners will be happy to see the cameras going out and you'll be rolling with a great camera now. Everyone wins. If you can't afford that, then ask for volunteers with cameras. If you look back in the threads you'll see Ketch pulled off a multi camera red shoot with no money paid to anyone. As the ecomony contracts you'll find more and more people who have free time...

you can't change the economy and Jim has given us a heads up so we can all plan, so we can use this information to take advantage of the situation. I've seen dvx100s going for a song on craigslist...

good luck all, no disrespect intended to anyone, least of all future scarlet owners...

Why Australians can't buy a RED Camera

Why Australians can't buy a RED Camera

There are many Australians who want to buy a RED camera and can't. This may be why some (like me) have paid a deposit, qualified for a business lease and are still unable to buy it. This is because business leasing in Australia requires that the seller has an Australian distributor or the goods are already in our country before they will release the funds to buy the camera. If these two requirement can't be satisfied the banks will write a letter of credit to the sellers bank. However, RED does not accept letters of credit. So for anyone who would normally take out a commercial lease to fund their next camera, the RED is impossible to buy.
The only option left is to try an fund the RED camera using your home as security (that is, if you happen to own one).
I love the RED. I have a successful business. I qualify for the lending.
I just can't make the seller's selling policies meet up with our banks lending policies. If RED accepted letters of credit from overseas banks, it might just pave the way for small businesses in Australia to own a RED camera.

Same system in Canada. Red has talked about new distribution systems.
I hope they come through.

So much for "Free Trade".

Jim....

just want to encourage you.....those numbers will not directly apply to you

I talked to a guy at my computer store today.....he is amazed I have a Red...and he is waiting for a scarlet.

Ran into an old client, who shoots some crap on a $1500 sony HDV....he's wanting to buy 3 scarlets....

3 of my friends...not in the business....waiting for a scarlet.

Red is riding on momentum...and can create it's own market share. I don't know anyone counting the days to panasonics next model(and I have 3, and will now buy a 4th...because of the scarlet delay)

Not to say you should change your business plan at all....I think you know how to run a business....but don't underestimate the wave of hype that you have created :)

Film productions are getting a 50% tax break in the stimulus bill so that should help Hollywood during these hard times. I'll keep shooting with my Canon for now but will jump on a Scarlet purchase as soon as one is ready. Keep up the good work!

Jim, don’t beat yourself up.

The long term vision is extremely sound. Strangely I have always found that the delays we have had in our own technology development have always played to our advantage and allowed us to better assess the situation, raise the stakes and get into a bigger game.

Also strangely, INTEL last week announced their own kind of stimulus package and declared that they were going to spend $7 billion more this year. They are still laying people off, and it’s not clear if they will really put this into R&D to get substantially ahead of the competition (by developing new technologies, as they claim) or whether they will use the money to snap up patents, companies and useful technologies at a bargain rate?

DALSA gave up production of 4K DIGITAL CINEMA products just to say how hard this economic downturn is hurting the industry.Jim thank you for being our Digital wizard of OZ.

The solution is in distribution

The solution is in distribution

RED has done a great job in bring out a product that is enjoys high demand. Sure things are bad in America, but there are many countries still doing well. Here in Australia we've slowed down but we many of us are still busy. All RED has to do is work on a distribution system to get cameras to the rest of the world. I'm not talking about opening expensive fully-staffed offices. Just some kind of office that can act as a point of delivery for the product. I mean, just give us an avenue to buy the camera with a commercial lease. After all, any marketing guru will agree, having a great product isn't enough. You've got to make it easy to buy. Panasonic, JVC, Sony etc... they offer overpriced rubbish however, they have a great distribution network. That's what saves their asses.
As for Epic and Scarlet, they can wait. RED already has a camera that surpasses our wildest expectations. It's their distribution system that needs to be brought up to our:huh: expectations. Changing this could make all the difference in 2009.

From a business perspective

From a business perspective

Personally we at CameraAccess.com really appreciate Jim's openness on this matter.

Our business is primarily built to help Red users get the quality accessories they want, so the more Reds that are sold the better we do, the less that are sold tougher times ahead!

But to learn direct from Jim via this community about his plans - has meant we can adjust our plans the best we can to ensure we ride out this crisis - and that gets a vote of thanks in my book .

As for the future - any slow down in delivery, in our opinion, is just creating pent up demand and we are looking forward to it.

Jim You are a Tactical Genius...Lets leave it at that.

See you on the other side of the Canyon.

DogDay.

Easy to say if you have a budget that's $25k or more. :) The rest of us people waiting desperately for a Scarlet should just step aside with our meager budgets, I guess.

No. you should proceed full steam with whatever plans you have with whatever resources you can dig up. You are always responsible for your own destiny and for going around any road blocks that come up. Jim is being honest, possibly at his cost, but every other company in the world would just string us out in endless delays. Jim is letting us know what's happening so we can make plans, So make them. Make your movie. Scarlet is not the end all be all. While you are waiting, other people are shooting on 5DmkIIs, DVX100s, 16mm bolex or renting or borrowing REDs. It can be done. In the end you and only you are going to make that movie happen. I understand your disappointment, but there's not a successful filmmaker on the planet who hasn't learned to work around or through obstacles. Scarlet is not your ticket to the big time.

YOU are your ticket to the big time.

good luck yo.

Thanks Jim

Thanks Jim

I´m always impressed with your desicions!

Keep running things like this, and RED will be the only imagine capture device that there will be.

Not sure if maybe I missed it, but I'm very surprised that Jim didn't give even a very rough ballpark estimate on a possible delivery schedule. I know, I know, all subject to change. But you'd think that kind of announcement would come with some adjusted schedule. Even if it was within 3-6 months of accuracy.

Are we talking nothing coming this year? Spring 2010? This Christmas?

I don't fault any decision, since Jim knows the economics of his own company better than anyone else, but a rough ballpark would be nice.

And before anyone gets miserable about other companies not giving out that info on new products, Red has always been more open.

Chris

I believe I remember reading something to the sound of 2 months delay.

sad to hear that!

sad to hear that!

Well.. reading the posts all i see is people that already have a R1 are very glad because they will keep making money with their cameras.
I already expected a 2 months or more delay (i´m not a man of faith) so i guess now it will be "a bit" more
If you think people won´t have money for a Scarlet..
What makes you think they will buy any "old" R1??
If there has ever been a time for a revolution, it is right now!

p.d:
there is a spanish prover that says
"A río revuelto, ganancia de pescadores"
It is good fishing in troubled waters. (There is always a way to take advantage of a chaotic situation)

“There is no untrue proverb”, said Quixote to Sancho
