  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What does this mean?

I don't think Jim hit the breaks.
He just slowed to down to only slightly above the speed limit.

I think Jim has a very talented and special Team - and I now I am even more excited about what they have in the works - now that I know the Team will get just a little more sleep.

Thanks for the post Jim - I'm sure this decision will make all the new products that much better. Bravo.

Couldn't agree more.

The other Mark L. Pedersen. With an e. ;)

In New Zealand they say "No Hurry, No Wurry.
We are talking about a delay for some month's
Give everybody a break, overtime is a BAD WORD. Not good for your soul and body.
Slowing down give you time to think and give you a fresh look at where you are working on. So to say, its a good thing. You only live once and you are not coming back! (nothing against people who think otherwise!!) Stay cool, enjoy what you have and not what you don't have.

Although it kinda sucks that it's gonna take longer for it to come out, its also beneficial for me, as it gives me more time to save up some money.

Actually, to all us RED ONE owners this is fantastic news....

Customers won't hold out for "the next big thing" for a while, and we can maximise the return our R1 towards optics and an Epic-X investment.

Which makes me think... What about that prime set?

I just feel that Red is being responsible. There isn't a camera that touches the Red One at more than a few times its price point.

An F900R sells for $69,000 and a F23 for $150,000.

If Jim is doing what's best for the company, that's good for all of us.

I understand the situation and I am willing to wait for my Scarlet few months more!

Sure, we wait! In Sweden we have an expression; "The one thats waits for something good never waits to long". :cold:

It wasn't a reference to how he was running the company, it just reminded me of some of the last-minute announcements that there were going to be production delays followed by a prolonged silence and eventually asset liquidation. John DeLorean was talking about new models and higher performance powertrains and suspension components right up until the company collapsed.

Judging from its eccentric looks and weight, RED one would be a worthy camera gear equivalent to what the Delorean was for the auto world...

But honestly, I really hope Jim´s company is healthy enough to push through this economic "downturn" which I sincerely believe is artificially inflated by some people who make a fortune off of it. I´m shure a lot of guys are sucking hard earned U.S. taxpayers money out of the system and right into their own pockets...

The same guys that have a problem with "spreading the wealth" and who fear a well informed, well educated public because it would endanger the influence and power they have over the masses. Those guys are sitting on the left, the right and in the middle, and by creating more and more paranoia about the future of the economy they distract people from the important issues.

I ordered my first Red One around NAB 2006. I waited two years to get it. I now have three Red Ones, fully kitted out and awaiting only the Viewfactor follow focus motors to be a complete shooting package.

So a delay of a couple of months isn't going to faze me in the slightest. I'm making gorgeous images today!

When Epic X arrives I'll trade up for $10,500 per camera and reuse or sell off my accessories towards new ones. And then Epic will serve me well for several more years.

Make no mistake people - this economic crisis isn't going to get better. What you need to do is use what you have today and make sure that you have the essentials such as food and shelter sorted. Then worry about doing what you do and while you may make less money than before, as long as you continue with passion you will find your market even in these uncertain times. Films will become smaller and more personal in nature. Take that concept and create, because people will want entertainment if only to take their minds off their circumstances. Be fair, accept reasonable pay for your efforts and you'll find you can weather the coming storm a lot better than most.

Best of luck everyone (especially those of you in the US).

I am a very happy Red customer. I own a Red One and two Red lenses that are great and will deliver stunning imagery for every level of production out there from short films to studio features and everything in between. When Jim announced the Epic and Scarlett, I believed it was an attempt to hedge his position in the market by protecting Red One's flank against competitors. I still believe this was the original case. We're all caught up in the lust for the "Next Great Thing™" and I know given Jim's track record that we will see it sooner rather than later.

What bothers me about this whole situation is the sense that the hype has undermined the reputation of the original Red One, which is still the finest digital cinema camera the world has ever known IMO. So hot off the heels of this grand slam home run that is the Red, there's this fantastic anticipation of Epic and Scarlet. What exactly is everyone waiting for? The Red One is here now. The Epic and Scarlet will arrive soon, but believe me, after that there will be another camera announced or at least another brain, or class of brains.

The Red is here and the workflow, the file types, the system is available to us right now. It will take as long as it takes to get the new system to the end-user in the quantities promised. Trust me, Jim will have better things to spend money on than overtime, in getting these products ready to ship out to the waiting masses. If you are putting your career dreams on hold because you want to shoot with an Epic or a Scarlet, that's foolish. With that attitude, you are doing yourself a disservice. Filmmakers make films. Period. Filmmakers use whatever camera they can get their hands on to make films.

I love shooting with my little Fuji Finepix E550 6 megapixel camera. I love shooting with my Canon HV-20. I love shooting with my Red One. I'm very lucky to own a Red, but with the current economic climate, even if you don't own one, you can still shoot with one very affordably. Epic and Scarlet will be awesome when they get here. But don't put your career or your dreams on hold for something that hasn't gotten here yet. There are all kinds of possibilities that could prevent you from being able to purchase one in the future.

Build your reel now. The time is now to shoot your project. Think about it. Everything is on sale right now. Your money will go farther right now than it has at any other time. Build your reel on a Red One. Shoot your film on a Red One. There is literally no better time than RIGHT NOW!

Just to let know, my money for an Epic X plus a Scarlet are ready under my pillow.
Anyway, love my RedCam, just seems i'll have to train for heavy equipment a little longer ... :)
Just feels strange to see Jim with a shade of pessimism, always imagined him kind of optimistic until the end of the world ... seems we're all humans after all?

Jim, is this a bad time for me to ask for a loan? Seriously though, the camera purchasing percentages are down but I think that's only a reflection of prudence rather than downright inability. Owners of perfectly good equipment are not stepping up to the next flavor because the benefits are fairly measured, if at all. When times are tough we tend to not leverage ourselves for a few more pixels or horse power- but there are no cameras to compete with the Scarlet Epic specs and infrastructure- It's not like every potential new camera purchaser out there can say: Oh, I think I'll just hang with my 'Crimson' 3K super 35 ... .
So RED offerings should take a very decent share of what's to be had. I hope it's enough when it does happen.

Well it basically sums up as this:

Anyone who already owns a RED ONE is happy and willing to wait.
Anyone who was looking to get an EPIC was expecting to wait until mid-2010.
And anyone who doesn't own a RED and was looking to buy a Scarlet is ticked off.

Kind of shows where the focus of demand is. I'm all for slowing down on overtime to save costs and not burn out people. Just if you're going to take a delay i'm hoping it's going to be on Epic and not as much on Scarlet. All those Scarleteers, being your average consumer mob (as intended) have a habit of using pitchforks and torches when they feel threatened. Hehe.

Out of curiosity. Any info on which cameras might be delayed more than others would be great. I'll be waiting for new info from you folks. Keep on trucking.

I second this. I am in no rush of investing another 10 grand for a machine that already works great.
