  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What does this mean?

Ok why not make a poll of how many of us are really able to buy Epic, Scarlet, etc. cameras now or in near future so we can see how good or bad it really is?

it isnt 100% proof but something to start with

What wait? We're shooting with Red One right now and loving every frame of it, Jim. It gets here when it gets here. To use a Rumsfeldian paraphrase: you go into production with the (very superior) camera you got, not some future piece of hardware.

Unsure

Unsure

I feel compelled to say something, with a post from Mr Red is meet with almost 10 pages of positive feedback from a negative decision. I was told from someone close to Jim that the level of worship on this site makes him uncomfortable and no doubt the amount negative angry posts takes it toll from unhappy and unrealistic customers who are not grateful for the avenues that red has opened up. I am a little bit of both camps, this decision is not a positive one, it might be a necessary one but it is not helpful, when the so called crazy rich man has to keenly watch his dollar that adds more fear to the financial crisis, no NAB and now expected delays, is it a case of aiming to high with the targets RED set itself? Either way if its only a few months then don't sweat it at all, hell take 4, but be aware that every time something like this happens the nah sayers of Red have more ammunition and despite the great success of the camera pushing it forward to a sometime reluctant world is difficult. Now if I may for a few lines drop into worship mode Jim, I do very much love what you have done with the Red One and can't wait to see what is next, and of course am jealous of everyone who is on the front line of this research.

I think the point is, RED are showing once again that they are as close to complete transparency as they can be, which is hugely appreciated by the very vast majority of us.

I wouldn't bank on any confirmation of pricing structure for cameras and gear, given we're talking about the state of world economics I think it's wise for RED to be totally reviewing everything.

What i'd love though is if there's some way I can spend some time checking out a RED One in London as that might be the way I look to invest my money now.

Good decision

Rather you stayed in business so your camera is available to buy. Your modular system represents a massive advance in film technology, regardless of which order, components come out. I'm sure it will be very successful.

I for one, would be happy to put a deposit down for the epic x upgrade, especially if it locked the price in.

I personally think this is good for the market, people are still adjusting to the RED in the market. I talked to a producer who had 2 proposed budgets, one for RED and a bigger one for film and I asked him if he'd specifically shot them out side by side and wanted film for a particular look. He hadn't and they were basing it on being used to and liking film. After I showed him the knowing trailer, I think he's rethinking it...

In the end though, RED one, scarlet or 35mm, it really comes down to the people to make the picture...

anyways, kudos jim, I like the way you do business.

More time to make money with beautifull images from my R1.:calm:

I´m glad I own a RED one and have no interest in neither Epic nor Scarlet for another 5 years minimum... let it be 10! That gives me more time to think about content istead of more toyz and to focus on what is really important to me, telling stories...

The RED one is all I ever dreamed of in a digital camera, what do I need Epic or Scarlet for? 1 or 2 stops more latitude? A couple of fps more? Even less depth of field than S35? In my opinion that´s all expendable...

I will be able to make great looking movies with my R1 for a long time to come... people have been shooting great films with Arri 35 II´s for 30 something years or even more. O.k., film stocks have improved, but software updates or a new sensor will do the same...

We can finally shoot with 35mm lenses and 35mm dof, we can edit and colorgrade at home... man, what else do we need? There´s only one thing I can imagine: Good stories to tell...

I don't mind the delay on the Epic. I just hope that focus is put on getting the Scarlet out there as quickly as possible. From the general comments, and even personally, it seems that most of us have the money sitting for one.

Plus it'll give some of us the time getting used to all things RED before we go cannonballing into the deep end on the R1 and Epic. I think it's the indy filmmakers whose time this is to blitzkrieg ahead while the big filmmakers and studios are trodding carefully.

With those of us that manage to succeed, it means a bigger and better next film and the money to upgrade to the Epics when they become available (which seems to be the consensus from the pro's already who aren't expecting them till end of 2010).

Vive La Red Revolution!

Financial trouble for red?

Financial trouble for red?

In my perspective, looks like people and the market is being manipulated with this news. Regardless of a downturn in the economy the world still turns and cameras and gear are still being purchased. I could understand a scale back in Red's plans in response to the market, but there are so many people who have been waiting and adjusting their plans for Scarlet and the other offerings. For Jim to present a vague message about slowing down production of the new cameras really seems like a sign of a company that is not aggreesively moving forward. Coupled with no NAB, to some it may seem that Red is in finanical trouble. Couple that with no NAB and there is really the wrong message to the red nay sayers. I know that the economy has hit eveyone, even billionaires. It just seems that red is onto something big, and they are taking their foot off the pedal. I'm sure Sony isn't steping back, why should Red?

i am fine with it.
some tweeking on the red one, some development of epic/scarlet...
some red primes...

and then scarlet/epic can come.

I initially was planning on buying a red one, but when the s35 scarlet was introduced as a future product, and the specs appeared to fulfill my needs, I made a conscious decision to wait for the scarlet. I believe that there are many others who may have a similar mindset and this may also be influencing the drop in red one sales, beyond the economic downturn. Here in Australia I've watched the dollar drop from ~US$0.97 seven months ago to ~US$0.63 at the moment. This is bad for me wanting to buy a Red camera and it is bad for Red, who sells Red cameras. But despite this abysmal situation I would still consider buying a scarlet if it was introduced in the next month. It has a price point that makes it appealing even when the economy is down and the dollar (especially the Australian dollar) needs to be stretched further. In fact the price point of the scarlet (at least to an Australian buyer) is close to what it would have cost to buy a red one 7 months ago. Therefore people who have allocated money for the red one may now find themselves going for the scarlet as a ‘substitute’ product in bad economic times. Though the scarlet is not a substitute by any means (in many ways it is a superior product), but a substitute as far as the pricing is concerned.

Just more time to make more money with my RED One...

Take your time, do it right... If it happens that will be great...

If not then we'll shoot RED One...

Best,

Right, right, right.

What does this mean in terms of the upgrade to the sensor for the Red One? Will that still be on time?

Yikes.

Yikes.

This reads a lot like the last few public statements made by John DeLorean right before the company imploded.

That's one of the funniest comments I've ever read on a public forum. Congrats on making me laugh. :)
