  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What does this mean?

Rational management decisions that enhance the possiblity of long term survival and stability are a plus in my book. My company has done the same.
Plus you may find a better rested and fresher crew will actually be more productive in fewer hours. Beyond a certain point, overtime and long hours become counterproductive anyway.

Best wishes and thanks for keeping us all informed.

Any way you color it, slice it or spin it.... this is a smart choice. Do you have to like it? No. Do you need to accept it? Yes. The world doesn't always line up and play fair.

Jim and team, toil away. We will still be here waiting.

My first post here and I know I'm gonna get ripped a new one but I had to post. . . . How can you go from such a raw untested prototype to market in under 6 months? In my opinion, you can't. Point being, slow down and give realistic specs and delivery dates that you can keep or you might loose face with many potential buyers.
No need to worry about gaining a "new one" (although having it would've enabled a more efficient use of your time). Your points are valid. But up till now, Red had envisioned an ambitiously short schedule for Scarlet. Remember, Scarlet was originally going to be released in "early 2009," meaning, I assume, spring. Red was set up for accelerated production, so it probably could meet that schedule or at least come close. The redesign, of course, delayed release, and the update to the redesign meant a further delay. With the economic crisis, some of Red's suppliers disappeared, so Red had to scramble to compensate and avoid significant further delays. But, as Jim has said, for what? Much of his projected market has dried up, at least temporarily. I'm just hoping that Red doesn't ultimately have to terminate the Scarlet and Epic lines. I also hope that during this delay Red can further improve an already impressive set of specs and, simultaneously, find a way to reduce prices (although price increases wouldn't surprise me).

I just experienced Red's customer service. My cam refused to boot - it was dead. Also my cam was due for the upgrade program. I send the RedOne to RDC and got it 9 days later back; including travel (crossing the atlantic) and customs. The camera actually spend max. 2 days at Red.

Now I have a working camera back with a faster CF-board and and an audio board that does 48v phantom power. All for nothing, including shipment. Ok, I have to pay customs fees for "processing outward" as they call it, about 100 EUR. That's it. Red's bomb squad rep. John did a good job, competent, fast and friendly.

I want that Red stays that way. The company is establishing something that can be namend "The Red Way". Rushing things may endup in an overstrained staff that will lose the "Red Way".
On the other hand the competitors don't sleep. And since I jumped off the Arri wagon and onto the Red train I don't want to change the band again. In the moment the RedOne is second to none if retail price does count. That will change sometime. Better Red is the reason.

Make the EpicX the best owner-affordable cinema camera on the planet. Developing half a year more won't make the camera less mature and feature-rich, I guess.

I never thought I would get my EpicX befor Summer 2010 actually, I know that lot...

Hans

More time with RED One... Thank you...

More time with RED One... Thank you...

Just more time to make more money with my RED One...

Take your time, do it right... If it happens that will be great...

If not then we'll shoot RED One...

Best,
Frazier Nivens, Ocean Imaging

Cutting the overtime makes sense, but whenever the fixed scarlets are available, I've already saved the money and ready to buy one now.. probably a few years away from an epic FF35.

But the volumes we had counted on to support our massive overtime effort to get this done quickly... just aren't there. Retail camera sales are currently off 40-50%.

It's funny, I just popped over to reduser to take a break from reading financial news and market watching, with the thought that I needed a bracing breath of RED air, a reassurance that innovation and ingenuity still stood a fighting chance against the prevailing winds. And read this instead.

I'm not disappointed in RED, quite the opposite--prudence in these markets and this economy has been rewarded over and over. But it does serve as an interesting marker for the desperate times that we are in. We are in for some rough sledding, all right. The worst is yet to come. Fiat currencies about to take the beating of a lifetime...4-6 months from now, maybe sooner, it may be quite hard to even put price tags on manufactured products...

Could this lead to a possible consolidation of the line up also. 1 Red 1 Scarlet 1 Epic, instead of pandering to a market that does not exist any more.

Doesnt that pretty much cover all the bases at this point?

I was truly wondering when this post would come, but I knew it would have come, it would have been just nonsense to ignore current global financial situations, even China as the world largest cash country, it is closing down business by the thousands!!

I was heart broken (literally :) ) to have to shot down my newly open studios and would have loved to keep it open despite my health issues, but it just wasn't justifiable when accounting for the expenses to keep it running and the work available.

So Jim made a good business decision here, and I support that!

ciao

such a time is EXACTLY the time to push forward as fast as possible, when competition is asleep and everybody else scales back.

Frankly, I hope so. I recall Apple's disastrous scheme of producing a dizzying array of computers. Sure, that insures that there is more likely a model for almost every need and pocketbook, but it also invites confusion in the marketplace.

I don't look forward to explaining to producers exactly what my particular Red camera is and how it is different from all it's siblings.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

It will only take more time to buy it. Nothing else.. since i´m waiting for a affordable RED since 2005 :)
The important thing is that you guys are still working and we will see the result.. GO RED!

Business is business. I certainly appreciate you keeping us in the loop about it rather than in the dark...

Hope we will hear updated projections for delivery schedules soon.

Later,
Jason

Which Scarlet and Epic models would they drop? I could see doing the 2/3" Scarlet and the S35 in both Scarlet and Epic to meet the core pro video/cinema market needs. Delay Monstro and the larger formats for better times?

Thanks Jim, appreciate your keeping in touch with us in this way. I felt an internal sigh of relief from this, as I have much left to accomplish with my Red One without having to consider an upgrade. It remains the best camera I have ever had in the past 35 years so I'm not in a hurry. Now I have to figure out if I'm going to upgrade my still gear to the D3X, which I have been waiting for a long time. If you can continue to employ your team and continue to innovate as well, you have a lot to be thankful for.

What about releasing a Red 2 in the interim, using the current internal design, sensor etc in the new, modular form factor (with the ET mount:bleh: ). A product falling between the Scarlet and Epic. Assuming the parts required for the manufacture of R1's are flowing it would just mean breaking up the boards into the module bits.

Of course, like everyone else suggesting alternatives to Jim's, I've just added to the workload, not reduced it.:whistling: As you were...
