  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What do you plan on shooting with FIXED Scarlet ?

Practically everything my kids do :-)

Graeme

I'd imagine this to produce some cinematic imagery all of the family can enjoy ! Is it ok to call "cut" in real life ?

up until jarred posted that dslr to scarlet side by side i would have agreed with you. after the brain, all you really need is power, a small lcd touch screen and maybe the redmote. that's not too much larger than canon, right?

it's RED's site so of course they have every right to photograph their products so that they look their best.. but that photo was not a accurate representation of their respective sizes.. Scarlet goes backwards! Photograph a scarlet and a D3 from the side and you'll see a big difference, even before you put any modules on. Also the D3 and the Canon 1D are big cameras.. Still photographers regularly complain about how heavy they are, though not of course about the image quality, which is why Scarlet and Epic are even bigger.

depends on if you are talking about the fixed or interchangeable, the fixed is quite long where the cinema is much shallower.

besides that I'm fairly sure that the shot was just meant to give you an idea of the size of the camera, and the Nikon was just the available camera they had. It's not like the quote above the photo was look at how small it is compared to the Nikon. It has been the users who are the one's who took it as a comparison to the other camera and not a frame of reference.

Is that true? My impression is that the modules are all roughly the same size, except that as the sensor size increases in the Scarlet modules and/or as you jump up to Epic they get a little fatter and heavier.
I agree that the shot was obviously supposed to give you an idea of the size of the camera, but clearly shooting it from the front makes the Fixed Scarlet seem smaller than the D3, whereas shooting it from the side would make it look bigger. I can't imagine Jarred didn't know what he was doing when he took the picture, and I would have done the same.. :-) It's just that if people are inferring from that pic that the Scarlet is smaller than a D3 then that would be wrong.

I was talking about the depth not the width if that is what you thought. the fixed is longer due to the extra room needed for the internal mechanics of the fixed lens. You can see this by looking at the picture of the fixed lens in the oct 30 announcement.

It was most likely just smart planning putting them both facing forward. I agree that kitted out the scarlet will be much large in comparison. But considering people always ask for a miniDV tape or something as a size reference in the picture after each announcement, I assumed this was to appease them and the main purpose of the shot.

There is a lot of talk about craft and experience...which is completely true. But our craft is the visual medium. Story is a given. If you aren't gonna shoot a well crafted story whats the point. I am buying the Fixed and the Cinema to complement each other for narrative filmmaking. These cameras are 100% capable of creating outstanding visual images to carry your story.

The camera is just a tool yes...but it is also the eyes and mind of your story. The wishes and dreams of your characters manifested. Your story will demand that you will use the maximum quality that is available to you to translate this to your audience. While I agree a camera is a tool, I also implore you to treat it more than a tool. But as a key to your creative soul.

At the end of the day that is why we are here isn't it, rather than anywhere else.

Well said Tim ! story is king.

oh, nevermind, just noticed you'll be shooting kitty PRON.. that's totally fine : )

I will pick up the scarlet fixed lens camera and use this with a nanoFlash unit HDMI out of red and into the nano, SGBlade 35mm adapter and nikon lens. I use this now on a EX3. Then we will see how things go. This would be a start with Red and should allow footage out of this camera to be used in a lot of different situations.

Why record the HDMI output? The Scarlet records a far higher resolution (3K, which is about two and a half times higher resolution than 1080p), higher quality image, with many more frame rate options (up to 120 frames per second sustained, or 150 fps burst) on its own flash or hard drive modules than what you'd get out of the setup you're proposing. It's raw video too, so it gives you far more processing options and flexibility in post production than recording RGB.

I plan to use the scarlet for personal stuff, weddings, commercials, small independent productions and documentaries. I can't wait to try the Scarlet out. I would love to have one fixed and one that I can use my canon lenses on.:grouphug:

remember, canon lenses will have a major crop factor resulting in telephoto fields of view.. Great way to get an affordable tele though : )

Im looking at the Fixed as my push into owning my own pro gear. I see it as a good start point to upgrade from. The company I work for has 2 REDs, with a view to buy more Epics, so I'm hoping the 8X Scarlet will fit into a nice rental niche as a compact crash cam.

Hopefully going to get some money for the Z1 and Letus which have been collecting dust on the shelf, sell my Nikon bodies (keep the glass for when I upgrade sensors) and spend the extra cash on Pro I/O etc.

And wasn't there talk of a built in 1080p recording mode anyway?

Yes, Scarlet 2/3" has "Scaled 720p or 1080p recoding at 60fps" in item #9 of the November announcement. I think that that's still RAW though, scaled from the full sensor.

It was originally going to have a 1080p RGB recording mode, but if I remember correctly (but maybe I'm mistaken) Jarred or Jim confirmed that the scaled shooting is in fact RAW.
