  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If one wanted to take shots while scouting, what DSLR might the best match for Mysterium?
This way one can play around with different looks before the actual shoot.

Any of the full frame DSLRs would be a good choice. I'd go with the Canon 5D

Any of them? Seriously. Based on the reviews at http://www.dpreview.com/ the current DSLRs are coming closer together as far as image quality. It seems to me they are now distinguished more by features and lens mounts, than anything very dramatically noticeable about the image.

I'm assuming you'd select a 1.5/1.6x crop DSLR, so your lens FOV would closely match the Red sensor. The 5D (24x36mm sensor) is fine too, you just have to apply the scale factor when considering field of view.

I'm guessing that changes in lighting from day to day and other uncontrolled factors, would make more of a difference in your image than what specific camera you shoot with.

Thanks guys.
What I'm most concerned with is matching in post. For instance, if I shot a particular DSLR side by side with red with the same settings and then brought the DSLR still and a matching frame from the RED footage into photoshop... Can I achieve the same look when say, applying identical s-curves to both shots?

Wouldn't it be better to start with a sensor size closer to the Red? the Canon 40D would at least be a general match for field of view etc.

Matching disparate systems is pretty hard. More important than your choice in DSLR is the raw conversion and post-processing. It will be challenging to match REDCINE's look.

I don't know what magic has been worked with the upcoming firmware build, that remains to be seen.... but with the current firmware, you need to do some adjustment of color, contrast, and sharpening to the Red footage before it will really match a typical DSLR image.

In other words I think the modern DSLRs are more like each other, than any of them are particularly like the Red. Yes, you can make Red image match a DSLR pretty well after adjustments, but it's not done simply by matching ISO rating, aperture, and shutter speed.

Okay... That pretty much answers my question. Thanks.

WRONG. A full-frame digital SLR will have a sensor significantly larger than the RED's sensor. Full-frame on still cameras is NOT the same as super 35mm in motion pictures.

I don't mean to be harsh, but people need to stop making this mistake.

when we all shoot mostly in 4k2:1 then we have only 8 Megapixel! So we have also a window mode like 2k is a window mode from the full chip. When the full mysterium chip is 24.4×13.7mm (Full Pixel Array 4900 (h) x 2580 (v))
then 4k2:1 must be around 20x10mm... this is simular to aps-c DSLRs like Nikon D70 f.e.

But what i really don't understand: why looks 6 Megapixel Nikon D70 with Nikon Zoom lens much better (sharper, more detail, more color differences...) on a 4k screen or dp, also in 1080p compared to 4k2:1 with RED and with a arri ultraprime or zeiss masterprime or canon lens.

Canon APS-C sensor size is the same width as Mysterium in 4k, but height is different. A DSLR isn't 16:9, it's 15:10. One solution could be to get something like a Katz Eye focusing screen (link) with 16:9 crop lines.

Are you talking about a RAW image, or JPEG? Have you done all of the color correction and sharpening to the Red image that the Nikon does in-camera to JPEG, or in software in the RAW converter? ...actually I'm not sure any of the DLSRs "raw" output is truly un-sharpened, etc.

Hmmm ... not sure I agree with you (as things stand today).

As of Build 15 I would not like to compare RedCine RAW to ACR (or similar) for pulling about the RAW images ... personally I can pull Canon CR2 files with better results than the Red R3D files, specifically shadow noise for material that needs 'lifting'.

Build 16 may well be completely different ... by all account, one can (then) start comparing to DSLR RAW images (cannot wait for Built 16 )

We have done side by side tests with the 1D MKIII and RED. I'll wait until someone else does these tests because you won't believe me... :)

If you are talking Build 15 ... then I must be doing something wrong (if I hit the sweet spot, I'm WAY HAPPY with my RED ... it's when I have to rescue things that I struggle).

If you are talking Build 16 ... then why would I not believe you ! I've believed so far ... thus, I have no intention of deviating now ;-)

Cheers

This is something for our customers to post. Build 16.
