Just a bit of correction. DisplayPort is not proprietary it's from VESA.

Apple isn't the first company to use DP either. Dell has had a DP monitor for months. Apple's the first to use the mini DP connector to my knowledge.
Glossy vs Matte is a tough one. Let's not fool ourselves and expect color accuracy rivaling a Pro monitor in a laptop but a Pro laptop should come with a choice. I'm pissed that the 13" Macbook doesn't have FW either because I'm an audio guy and FW audio interfaces are the best.
Displayport is not properiatary, but the MINIdisplay port Apple uses, is.
So you have to buy all these adapters, even if all other screens will support normal Display ports. Why do they use this? Because it takes less space... with other words: form over function.
