  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What a great time...

There is some bad news in all this though.... Even though the sensor will be done by the end of the year as expected, and we will have some Dragon-Epic prototypes floating around we will share as best we can..... realistically you guys will need to wait a couple more more months until the new new ASICs come out of the oven to start the whole customer upgrade process.
The delay is very good news... it means, like so many times before, that we are getting a better upgrade than originally planned. Most companies would have just shelved the new capabilities for a later paid upgrade. You guys seem to take the approach of trading time-to-release for value to the customer. Relatively speaking, AFAIK RED is the best bargain on the planet.

That is also the reason we havn't committed to a Dragon-upgraded Scarlet yet.. we gotta wait to see how the new ASIC handles things.

To be clear you haven't committed yet to the Dragon-Upgraded Scarlet's *specs/price* yet ... right? I heard a pretty strong commitment to Dragon Upgrades last year when I bought my Scarlet. Or are we back to the old policy of "upgrade means selling and buying a new brain" (which honestly still seems like the cheaper route...).

Would it be safe to assume that the new asic means more insane frame rates at 6K?

I was working on an Oakley film back in 2005 at their headquarters when I saw foam cutouts of a first gen Red and the 300mm sitting on a table. I had no idea the philosophy/mission behind those chunks of foam would help steer the future of digital cinema.

I love a good underdog story, well, underdog considering you picked a fight with Canon, Arri, etc!

Jim and Jarred,

These are really wonderful news and times. Re-designed ASIC and wide latitude sensor!

Do You plan to support Codex recorders in the near future and can we expect any hardware accelerator for 6K processing/rendering?

I hope;) but i dont think so its more like max 60-75fps @6k on 1:10 compression
with the 256gb ssd-speed

5k at 75fps needs 1:9

It was stated by Jim earlier that you'd have up to 96fps at Full 6K. Now, maybe even higher with the superior asics...

I was going to ask exactly this...

+1 on this for me too. I get the constant changes and flux of design etc, but I've always been operating on the basis of being able to upgrade the Scarlet, if this isn't the case I'll have to plan accordingly.

In accordance to the title of this tread started by Jim, let me be the first to congratulate him on his recent membership into the ASC as an associate member. Jim, I think it's fair to say that not only Red but also YOU have come a long way in these seven years. It's a well-earned honor and I'm thrilled with the news.

For those of you that don't know, associate members of the ASC are not working cinematographers, but are still vastly important contributors to the art and craft of cinematography. Unlike full cinematographer members, associate members do not include the ASC after their name, but it is still a great honor and recognition from the cinematographic community to nominate an individual as an associate.

Keep the underdog mentality, but know in your heart that you've already made a lasting mark.

Cheers!

We definitely are committed... that hasn't changed.. but we wont know till we know..

Wow, that's AMAZING news, and a true honor. I'm a huge fan of the ASC, and devour the magazine every month. Congrats Jim!

The new ASIC is actually very exciting. The current ASIC would have been designed 3 - 4 years ago...that is a long time in the tech world. The new one could be a serious improvement. It could run a little cooler, maybe a little bump in framerates...who knows what can be done in 3 years.
