Hi all,

Just wanted to get some advice on what would be a good zoom for run and gun style work with the Scarlet.

I don't have a heap of cash so old glass will have to suffice.

I mainly shoot docos that will be viewed on DVD and also on the big screen with a couple of film festivals/tours.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey Phil,

I'd really have a gander at Ebay if I were you. I just did a search for C-Mount S16mm and came up with a TON of results.

I happen to grab a Canon 15-150mm T2.8 C-Mount Lens today, I just happened to take a shot at it, and it paid off cuz the lens is in great condition.

Still not sure about that exact quality specs for it, although there wasn't a TON of info bout it online, I did find a quick convo between to DP's and one stated that it, In his opinion, had more sharpness than the Angeinux 12-150 C-Mount (which many have said was a GREAT buy)

It would also be a great idea for you to head over to scarlet user and check out the lens section, David has a wealth of info there regarding this subject.

Don't ignore the Arri B mount and standard mount lenses on Ebay. These can be very easily converted to PL mount with an adapter for a few hundred bucks.

For those who are risk averse, Visual Products and Whitehouse AV usually have a decent selection of used 16mm zooms fully serviced with a warranty for fair prices. You can get some good buys on Ebay, but most of the better quality choices are typically falling in the $400 and up range and you can get stuck with some junk occasionally. The best quality lenses I have bought on Ebay have come from 16mm film makers liquidating their packages, not from the flea market type dealers.

Thanks for the info guys.

I spied this on on Visual Products' website.

Zeiss 10-100mm T3 Zoom Lens

I know Zeiss has a good reputation as lens makers, but I just wanted to know if something like this going to produce a nice, crisp high definition image.

Please excuse my ignorance but I have no idea about 16mm glass at all.

If I recall correctly it's a decent lens as far as speed, contrast and resolution. However it breathes like a life long 5 packs a day smoker in an iron lung and does not focus very close. In my 16mm days I never chose it over the other canon/angenieux/cooke options. All that being said, I know some people who did some great work with it back in the day.

The classic Canon 8-64 PL S16mm zoom is a great lens that starts pretty wide and ends meaningful long with a T2.4 that does not ramp until approx. 40mm. From then on the lens loses also a bit of its sharpness.

The Canon 8-64 has been THE S16mm workhorse for many years until it successor 7-63 hit the market. On the contrary to the S16mm modified Zeiss 12-120 (the 10-100 is N16mm) it does hardly breath and is considerably wider which makes it the best choice in doc applications.

I use it often with the RedOne for docs, shooting 3K 2:1 and cropping later to 2.5k 16:9 that delivers full resolving 1080p RGB.

The Zeiss 10-100mm T3 Zoom Lens also Zooms backwards ... had one a long time ago and sold it as the reverse zoom drove me nuts (I didn't use a zoom motor at the time which, of course, can be reversed). Otherwise, it is a really sharp lens.

That Canon 15-150mm is a monster of a lens. I always wondered why they made the lens this size in a C-mount. Sort of like a tomato on a toothpick. Does produce nice images though.

Does anyone know whats the stock lens mount the Scarlet will come with is? Or will we need to by them all separately.

I'm trying to see which lenses I want to invest in. I'm leading to PL mounts but I'm still not sure.

I wish RED would offer their fixed lense as a interchangeable lense as well...

For me, the fast Miniprimes are THE argument for interchangeable, though I'd love a digital zoom such as the fixed lense...

If RED only would offer that glass for the Scarlet Cinema...

Does anyone know if that has been discussed before?
