  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Westinghouse Ultra HD/4K Panel for $2500.

Thank you Tonaci! Had no idea these were coming out at this price point...

Edge-lit... meh. But the price is good. :) All new TVs will be UHD and cheap soon. A little patience will go a long way here...

Unfortunately because of the lack of content it will be hard to convince the public to spend extra dough on these IMO...

Just like HD TVs, I think the key will be to buy based on the quality of the pixels and the feature set you need otherwise I suspect a lot of these "4K" TVs are going to be a disappointment. Things like black levels, motion accuracy, color reproduction, contrast range, etc are all things that need to be considered to make the enjoyment of 4K something spectacular. I have to admit, I don't have a lot of faith that Westinghouse will nail all those areas. I think they'll hit the resolution spec (probably barely) and everything else will be marginal. They might prove me wrong though. That would be great, especially for the price.

I'm with Steve in his assessment, hopefully we'll both be wrong and it will look great.

My greatest hope is that Sony will take the color management and sophisticated up-scaling tech in their 84" XBR-900 UHD device and put it in a smaller and more affordable display. Of all the major players I feel like Sony does DSP chips the best and gets more out of the OEM glass substrates than other vendors. Sadly they are finding it difficult to translate their picture quality advantage into a premium price point product that sells in the volumes they desire.

Cheers - #19

Has anyone done the math about how big the panel needs to be to even see a viewing difference beyond 5ft?

As a bonus for waiting for UHDTV, I think OLED yields will improve and eventually overtake LCD panels. 4K sets will have much better contrast, be thinner, and less power hungry. Gonna need a lot of juice for that 110"er!

Yes, but a lot of people keep presuming based on bad vision instead of the best vision, even 20/20 is far from best. It is not what we see at a wide field of view, it is what they see. We can at least double viewing distance that way.
