  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey RedUser,

My roommate and I were doing some unscientific side by side's and noticed that my Epic-W had some pretty serious green banding in the skins with the Standard OLPF. I also notice an overall green tint to most of the images.

We used the same lenses on the Weapon-MG and it seemed to have no issues and performed fine.

Here are the links to the .R3D's

Is anyone experiencing the same thing?

The Epic-W image processing is not finalized yet, so there are issues with the color gamut. The original cause for the green is probably the practical light inside (this looks like natural light from window + practical light), household fluorescents and leds create that kind of color problems, but seems like the weapon is handling it better. You could test the cameras in natural light, and I doubt you would have these skintone issues then.

Switch the colour space to REDWideGamutRGB and the Gama Curve to Log3G10. Until Graemes new Transform LUT is available, adjust the curve to taste. This will give you an idea of where the new colour for helium is heading. A lot of the issues you see are gone using this method.

It's a known issue and there is a firmware fix coming. It can't be fixed through a RAW colorscience update apparently. This is causing me an inordinate level of stress since I already sold off a good bit of my Dragon gear and now I have a shoot coming up that I can't afford to have this bite me on. I literally just came to REDUser to survey and see how prevalent this is. Because it makes me 0% confident in using Epic-W for anything until it's fixed if it's common.

It's not fixable with a WideGamutRGB because it's actually a banding issue. It also isn't limited to the Normal OLPF. I switched out to Skintone and it's lessened to some degree but not gone.

Yeah, this is separate issue from using the wrong color processing. Using RWG/Log3G10 will not fix. I submitted a support ticket, here's the response I got:

"After running some tests and showing your R3D files to our engineers they confirmed that what you are seeing is something that they are working on addressing. Unfortunately I do not have an estimate on when to expect the change, however it is something that is actively being investigated here at RED."

Just curious, are you guys seeing it happen right between stops 11 and 12 when using the Gio Scope tool? That's where the green/magenta banding happens for me, without fail.

Im glad im not the only one noticing this. I find it weird that the Helium would be released without the Helium science.

Does anyone know a approximate release date for the science?

Yes... this greenish band/halo is terrible on skin-tone... also with natural light.
I found it on all Epic-W Helium cameras I've tried.
I hope for a resolutive fw update in a few days

There was a post on facebook in the epic group from Jarred yesterday, seems to be coming soon:

"Should have a preview build soon in a few weeks I hope. We need to get it right. I'm not pressuring Graeme Nattress with a specific deadline. When he's happy I am happy and hopefully you all will be too."

How's that Facebook Group called?

Graeme has stated over and over that the "color science" is already finished. That's what the camera does to turn photosites into color information. The color processing is what he's working on. Considering you can see this banding present in all color spaces and all gammas, it appears to me that it is a bit deeper rooted than the processing. I think it would be a bit ambitious to assume Graeme's color processing work for is going to address the banding issue.

Maybe they're rolling the color processing and whatever is needed to fix the banding into the same firmware update, but it's a very real possibility that one could happen before the other. My point is: Don't get your hopes up that the new color processing will fix the banding.
