I am working on a project that has RED 4kHD footage as well as 5D & 60D shot at 1080p. Everything plays well in the timeline, but I want to export a single Apple ProRes 1080p movie. When I got to share, it only gives me the 38240x2160 default export. Is it possible to conform all the footage in my FCP X, including the RED 4k HD to 1080p within FCP X? What have others done for this?

Hi Ben -

Ideally you would make your "project" a 1080p project and let FCP X use its "spatial conform" setting to auto size down your 4k footage to 1080p in your timeline. Then this is the "master" res for your project. You may be able to change this in your current project by pressing command-J when in the timeline. Changing the res may affect keyframed motion...

Otherwise you are "uprezzing" your 5d footage up to 4k and then downscaling it back to 1080 during export.

You can use compressor to export file sizes other than the native sequence, crop, etc.

So what if I create the 1080p master sequence, but want to use some select clips from the 4kHD RED footage for a zoom-in/crop-in. Is there a way to bring in and retain the resolution of the 4k clip in the 1080p timeline? Or should I use the scaling setting in FCP X for the clip? But will the scaling tool just be enlarging the downrezzed 4kHD footage in the 1080p timeline?

If you create a 1080P project and pull the 4K footage into that timeline and set the spatial conform to "none," you can manipulate the frame any way you want to reframe it.
