  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi all,

I'm shooting with a Weapon and Fuji 19-90 for the first time and the camera body isn't recognising the lens. I've checked in the Weapon menu that power is being fed to the lens, I've also tried "detect lens" and followed the instructions via the Weapon manual to do a hardware rediscover, all to no avail.

I'm wanting to use the servo for the zoom, but since the camera is not recognising the lens there, it seems it isn't powering the lens for the servo to function.

As this is my first time with the Weapon and the Fuji, I've selected Zoom "S" on the toggle under the servo handle, and tried adjusting the zoom speed, but nothing seems to get it working from the lens end, and since the camera is not recognising the lens I'm assuming it is an issue between the connection of camera and lens.

Any Fuji/Red users out there with some suggestion?

You cannot power the lens from the mount. You have to power the lens from an external source (p-tap from v-mount battery is what I use) and that power goes to a hirose 20-pin connector that feeds into the bottom of the servo. Disable the lens power over the PL mount, reboot and you should be fine
 
Disregard, seems like a dud Fuji as the iris is also creeping shut. No time to get another for the shoot so will make do.

Hi Michael,

Thanks. I'd been assured by the rental house that the Weapon PL mount natively powers the servo on the Fuji zoom. Either way, the lens has a few other issues and I wasn't given a power cable to power from tap.

Will check it out with the rental house when it goes back on Wednesday.

Not a dud. The creeping iris is a result if trying to power the lens via the mount, which you cannot do. If you buy the right cable and ext battery, you can get servo plus aperture metadata. Focus metadata is another story.
 
Support for power to lenses via the lens mount/collar has always been very limited on REDs. You should have the rental house mount that Fuji 19-90 on any RED they have handy and show it operating correctly without a separate power feed. When they can't, I'd ask for a discount or freebie if they wanted to keep my business.

This. In short, go into the menu and turn off power to the lens. That is what is accounting for the iris creep. From what I understand, (someone correct me if I am wrong) but the protocol for the lens data and power was (is) owned by Arri. RED intended to make all the functions of the lens work, but (again correct me if I am wrong) the friction between RED and Arri has prevented this. Get the cable to power the servo.
 
I don't think Red ever got the LDS license from ARRI. This is a paid and quite pricey license. Even Zeiss does not have it. Red AFAIK uses open source Cooke-i protocol...
 
Hi all, thanks for the replies. The rental house dropped the p-tap to Fuji cable for the servo - but that's good to know about the aperture being a symptom of the attempt to power the lens through the mount. Was my first time using the Fuji with the servo and it was otherwise great - though a shame it can't be powered directly through the mount as that would clean up the cabling.

That’s a bummer. I remember used to work back with my old Epic, but ever since the weapon body (and every firmware since) I’ve never been able to get the metadata working again. I’m using the hand grip with the dedicated power cable and I have gone through all the menus and talked to Fujinon support to be sure I have the little DIP switches in the proper locations. I’ve tried everything. Turning the lens mount power on and off, updating the camera firmware, updating the firmware of the lens and nothing. It works great on the Alexa Mini (with the grip set to LDS of course) and no power cable needed! I wish RED would get this working now or eventually in their next... DMSC3 body.
Metadata is becoming more and more important.
