  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I read on a RU thread here that doing simultaneous R3D & ProRes will affect the compression ratio of the R3D in certain circumstances. I'm curious as to what level of ProRes can be recorded without this compression hit, and also what is the actual advantage of doing this simultaneous recording in-camera rather than using an outboard recorder like a Pix, Atomos, or Blackmagic? Doing so would obviously eliminate any unwanted R3D compression increases.

6K 4:1 can do 4K Prores 422HQ at 24 or 25fps. Where Prores effects compression ratio is mainly on high speed shooting. For most typical cases the compression ratio will be pretty much the same.

It also depends what your codec of choice is.... So there's lots of differences.

Over cranking is why it's important, many recorders have limited settings. Rocket X and encoding cost money so for high speed to avoid lengthy bs like playback recording to a piped out recorder this is super key. I love high speed so I notice this a lot

ps I'd throttle my prores bit rate before my master r3d if I'm shooting both at once

It would be great to get a Phil Holland Style chart showing all the options on this one ;)

Lol that would take some time. Each ProRes codec has differing data rates at different frames per second. There's a big difference for high speed if you're recording 2K 4444, 422HQ, 422, or 422LT. So it depends on what codec you choose. I'm sure it would be easier for RED to release a chart than someone going through manually at varying frame rates for each ProRes flavor.

I'd make a chart, red send me a camera hook it up lol. I'm unemployed atm anyway

That's probably the best answer to my question since high speed recording externally is not really an option.

I'm never keen on recording external on camera anyway because either you are embedding a REC709 or RLF flat, plus only a camera scratch audio track. But sometimes that's what the client wants and as the old advertising slogan goes; "when the client gets what they want, they get what they deserve."

Better always to process the R3D's in Redcine or Resolve, add & sync all the actual production tracks, primary color correct or add a custom LUT, and THEN strike NLE dailies, but sometimes there just isn't time to do it right then.

well you can do the LUT in camera too now... so you can still do it right in camera with a preset look too...

Nobody has mentioned the BIGGEST ISSUE with outboard prores recorders and red, timecode and start/stop do not match up and will be a few frames off wreaking havoc with edl/xml and relinking back to original R3d's

Internal weapon prores is a match just like if you made proxies in post

Huge deal

Yep, internal ProRes is a huge deal and you DO want it. It saves you a ton of money, time, and headaches with other recorders. Not to mention this makes it less important to own a RedRocket X to process your dailies. That alone is worth the cost of in camera ProRes. Just so you know, the ProRes file is not affected by the compression ratio since it is pre Redcode compression (a clean stream directly from sensor to codec). The R3D is mainly affected here. There's more detail and info in the ProRes file at higher compression ratios than the R3D. So your Prores at that point will be higher quality, albeit without RAW controls. So keep that in mind.

Has anyone done a comparison between weapons in camera prores vs. prores from a red rocket-X?
Seems like it would be super easy to do. That is if you have access to a redrocket-X.
Also, is there any word on Red giving us the ability to switch to DNxHD files instead of prores?

Really interested in the DNxHD also
