  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon REDVOLT Expander ( Updated )

Awesome module. If i go WEAPON this will be one of the first i'll order.

I like the juice on this guy

Gotta say you have all the portes covered that would be needed.

Love the Power In so I can run off house power on Dolly and a fail safe Red Volt or attach V Lock in case power goes out during take Camera will continue to roll

TC & Dual SDI is great too

One Feed to Village with MetaData
Second Feed to DIT DP/DIR with FilmLog and Clean for LiveGrade

Something that is cool about all of these Expander and having the SDI, DC IN, and various other ports not permanently attached to the camera is that if you have a severe cable yank or whatever, odds are you are replacing a module and not the whole camera body. Based on how I've seen people treat their HDMI, SDI, and DC ports I think this will save a lot of time and money for the "working shooters" out there.

Love this! Exactly what we need. Great work guys!

Would love to see a tactical plate spanning both camera and RV expander.

A tactical plate that covers both camera and the RV Expander is an awesome idea. On big productions real estate on the Red cameras is a constant battle and one reason most ACs prefer Alexa. Maybe WC will supply an answer?

I'd like to see a RED version with extended Pongo connectors for the Top handle and LCD. Maybe the top plate could be split so if you wanted to go with lighter modules, you could without having to pull the entire plate. You might lose some added rigidity with a full length plate, but that may not be a factor...

Jarred, any thoughts on this as an upcoming option? We've been really happy with our tactical top plates on our Epics and would love to have a comparable Weapon solution.

The top handle stop/start switch and simple monitor connection is a really nice feature so it would be great to have those contacts integrated into the design.

We went in and did a bit of a redesign on the REDVOLT Expander. Added an additional SDI output, more AUX power , Auto Boot on Power circuit, and a modular Audio bay.

When I finally decide to flip over to WEAPON... this is an AUTOMATIC PURCHASE !
AWESOME ! If you could squeeze a REDVOLT XL inside of it, it would have been even more perfect.
Snapping a VLOCK mini on the back of that, and you won't need anything else.
Perfect module

Hi Red,

Been seeing a few options out there like this, but nothing takes field shooters into account who MUST record GOOD audio into the Camera. Got my forged weapon but I'm hanging when it comes to audio. Mini jack won't cut it. Nor will onboard mics. Need two channels preferable with 2xXLR with V-Lock or Xl power and head phones.

We need to stay light and compact.

I must say I'm blown away by the new design stuff on my forged, Nothing is an afterthought on this. 100% glad I bought into weapon. Modular stuff on epic was good, this is certainly next level.

The picture above shows 2x XLR inputs. What am I missing?

Blair, I think Michael is probably in the same situation as myself, where we don't use Redvolts and the sheer size of the expander is prohibitive.

Which leads me to request that Red design a unit that sits between the I/O unit and the Redvolt Expander. Something that has the typical SDI, DC, etc, but with XLRs (or even TA3s). Preferably also with the v-mount pre-configured.

The designs for Weapon modules are pretty damn slick, however there is a huge gap between these two units. Hopefully the new units that are yet to be announced fill these gaps. :)

Might be cool to have a wireless receiver module! Complete with simple menus for controling the channel and basic settings! Then we could record a wireless lav or two, or even have the Mixer send a nice downmix. That'd be a swell "scratch" track! And best of all, no more velcro for receivers!

Nice module....but...the redvolt batteries have been one of the worse red product to date. They do not hold their charge at all...after just a couple of use you can no longer get a 100% charge on them (the most we get is 70% charge and the camera shuts down with 8% left on batterie). I don't know if RED has addressed this issue with newer redvolt or change supplier. By contrast the RED bricks are probably some of the best batteries on the market period. We are still using the same bricks from the ones we got in with the RED One in early 2008 and they still perform incredibly. I really hope RED fixes the redvolt issues as I would love to use that small form factor for power.

Percentage and REDVOLTs, in my experience that's just one part of the story. While i see fluctuations and have sporadic problems with my quadcharger, i have to say the runtimes of my REDVOLTs and XLs are still within their specs.

I guess there is some software running in those batteries to communicate with the camera, which might even learn during the first cycles? How else would you explain that a 8x% redvolt and a 98% redvolt gave me nearly identical amount of minutes? ;)

Love these things, great formfactor and design overall. Would love to see REDVOLT², new cells, more consistent results and USB-C for charging (and software-updates) on the batteries itself. ...oh and a SH with REDVOLT-slot for WEAPON/RAVEN. :P
