  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've been shooting with a 6k Dragon for a while which I love. I've been thinking of moving over to Helium and have some questions about recording Pro Res. I don't seen this info on Red's site and was wondering if someone could answer these questions for me.

1.) Is it possible to solely record ProRes without recording RAW or do you have to record them both simultaneously? I've seen some people on this forum talk about this and I just want to get clarification.

2.) When recording at 8k or 7k does the camera record the exact same resolution for ProRes? Or does it scale the image to 4k? The highest resolution export option for a ProRes file that I am usually given on my computer is 4k, so I was wondering if the Red is generating 8k ProRes files.

3.) If it does record ProRes at the same resolution setting as the Raw file, is it possible to select a lower resolution for the ProRes file while selecting a higher one for the RAW file, such as 8K RAW with a 4k Scaled ProRes file?

4.) Will someone please give me $50,000?

Yes you can shoot prores OR avid codec on its own. Currently that prohibits playback IN camera.

The same field of view is recorded into the offline, as well as any color settings. For example if you set the saturation to zero in camera you will end up with baked in black and white image

And yes you have choices in the quality of prores. You could record 8k RAW and 2K prores LT for example and save a lot of media space
 
Hi Matthew are you refering to the prores plyback in camera? Because on the SW is possible to play prores after recorded....

So I can choose to shoot solely 2K ProRes LT and nothing else? And that 2k image will be an 8K image scaled down to 2K and not a crop of the sensor? If so, that is awesome.

Hi Matthew on the SW I recorded only prores and I was able to playback with no problem....is this only for the Epic W?
The latest work I did (before sending my SW back for the switch) was onky in prores and I was viewing the filming in camera!...thats scares me now if on the Epic is not possible this! But the firmware is the same....so....did you try it?
 
Just this week, I recorded in 2K ProRes 4444XQ with no additional R3D recordings on my EPIC-W, and I was able to play them back from the camera to check audio and footage. Everything plays back well.
 
I'd be curious to see the file structure on the mags for the combined R3D and ProRes recordings. As I anticipate moving to DSMC2 and recording ProRes, my own intent would be to use them mostly for quick dailies turnaround. In the popular NLEs, is it seamless to use the ProRes as "offline" and switch to the R3Ds without worrying about relinking?
 
Well, hopefully it will work next time you need it! =) I recorded some shots with redcode and prores and some with only prores depending on the length of the take. Just doing some tests with the 8K FF and 2K ProRes4444. And the production requested 2K ProRes, so I had to make sure they were able to get that. But I only had a 1 TB mini-mag with me at the time, which wouldn't have gotten me all day at 8K 8:1, hehe.
 
Concerning frame rates and ProRes. On Red's Tech Specs for the Epic-W they cite:

422 HQ, 422 and 422 LT at 4K (4096 × 2160) up to 29.97 fps
4444 XQ and 4444 at 2K (2048 × 1080) up to 120 fps
422 HQ, 422 and 422 LT at 2K (2048 × 1080) up to 120 fps

Does this mean you can record 2k ProRes up to 120 FPS with the sensor SCALED? Or do they mean that the camera's RAW mode has been set to 2k, effectively cropping the sensor and therefore allowing 120fps of ProRes to be recorded at a cropped 2k? In other words, can I set the camera to shoot 8k, see an 8k field of view though the viewfinder, and then only record a file that is 120FPS of ProRes showing a scaled image that incorporates the full sensor readout?

I have been hesitant to switch to Epic-W because I do not want to loose the fantastic frame rates and FOV I get with my Epic Dragon. But if the Epic-W can shoot up to 120 FPS at 2k with the image scaled, then I'm sold. I just need to be able to shoot some reasonable slow motion without a massive crop.
 
Hi Derek you will have the full fov of 8K downscaled in camera in 2k but you can only record prores up to 120fps if you are in 2k only.
On the SW I remember I can have 60fps at 4k foc scaled in 2k internally if im not mistaken
 
Hmmm. Ok. Thank you for the clarification. That makes this decision a bit more difficult. So if I understand you correctly, to shoot higher frame rates with Pro Res, you have to crop the sensor to what the camera is rated for at RAW, correct? So to shoot slow motion on Epic-W you pretty much have to crop the sensor down to at least 6k no matter what, even if shooting solely to ProRes at 2K?
 
When I need a good slow motion and all the fov I record R3D anyway I am sure you will not need long sequences in slow mo?
 
Do these settings ring true when shooting slow motion on the Epic-W?
Their tech specs state 4k ProRes can only go to 29.97 fps and 2k ProRes can go to 120fps:

Its awesome but it doesn't mean you can trick the camera into giving you 2K Slo Mo options, you still will be limited to the speeds of the 8K sensor.
