  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon First Impression

Matthew,

That's correct it powers the Weapon but no battery status in the display. I am using Red Brick Batteries so the information is there its just not being passed through.

Perhaps this is fixable in a future firmware update?

Tom,

I've been going over and over all the things i need to do to adapt to the new camera body.. this could be one of them, or maybe a firmware update will address.. anyone try different batteries with the ET V-lock? i know phil mentioned he uses one

ET have replied saying that the battery information should pass through to the camera with their V Mount battery module. I have opened a ticket with Red and we will see what happens.

Another observation with the Weapon regards to the built in top plate. Apart from their being only limited mounting threads due to the small real estate and large diameter fans the holes themselves are not very deep. You need to be very careful to use only short bolts or you could potentially seriously damage the camera if you overtighten a longer bolt forcing it to deform or penetrate the top of the camera. Unaware how robust the camera top plate is but I will be keen to add a top plate to add more mounting options and protect the camera

RED,

Can you reply to the request for a Weapon/Raven Tactical top plate? Is one on the works??

M

I have just unboxed my Weapon and its a freakin' awesome machine but here are some initial observations

The camera is so small and light which is awesome but unsure how I am going to get this camera into production mode. The top handle kinda hogs the mounting points on the built in top plate and the large fans mean there is not much space left. I am very interested on how others will deal with this issue.

Reading the manual I see there is no hot swapping of LCD or EVFs. This is going to be a big problem. ACs are very used to hot swapping on Epics and Weapon owners will need to make it VERY clear that this is no longer possible.

My Epic WC Base plate with LW 15mm rod adaptor fits the Weapon.

Can anyone help me and tell me what the screw holes are for in the attached picture?

Plan on doing some exposure tests next week and will test against the Dragon and Alexa and will publish ASAP

Ive been looking at the top plate assembly as well... I also thinking the handle is to far back, making it front heavy when you put a lens on and also hogging top plate realestate and the monitor pins and placement of the monitor doesnt really let you tilt the screen backwards and downwards with the handle in the way, especially when the camera is in a high position and you want to tilt the screen down.. the handle is in the way..
I'm sure there are work arounds. Pity. New camera and all.
Wont stop me buying one, But ill have to look at other solutions to get it into my mode of working.

W o o d e r n C a m e r a has a great top plate system that seems to relocate the touch screen PINS to the side, and give you all the space back. And a swivel top handle.
I'm temped to not worry about the cableless 7inch and just keep with the cable version and then I can put it where ever I want. Back, side top handle.
Some good thinking from WC team, RED design boys should be looking at WC ideas. I'd prefer to buy RED parts... but if RED don't make them, I can't buy them.

Take a look.

Their top plate is pretty clever. I wish it would also pass through the pins so you can still mount the cabeless LCD on top. That is what I would like to see in a top plate.
I'm using the 19mm pro kit on the bottom right now, but not convinced on the top plate especially when I'm quickly setting up cameras. What I'd really like to have is a 19mm cage with two top 19mm rails, and hook more stuff to the top rails through 19mm mounts(that way everything I do is just standardized on 19mm). I really like in the old days how the rails on the top of the red one were hooked up.

I'm pretty sure you could bolt a WC 19mm clamp to the front of their top plate

Hey Tom, I'm having this same issue with my IDX Batteries on the ET VMount. No Battery info. No voltage or anything. It's really awful and I'm using a WC Quickback and my old battery plates until I can sort this. Any word from RED?

Ok I asked Red Support about the Weapon manual stating "No hot swapping" on the Weapon and the good news directly from them is:

"but I wanted to let you know that the displays, including the new DSMC² RED TOUCH 7.0" LCD and DSMC² RED EVF are in fact hot swappable. This includes any of our other LCD's as well when using the LEMO adaptors.
We will work on getting the DSMC OPERATION GUIDES updated."

OK got an answer from Red on my Support ticket in regards to the ET V Mount module for Weapon not passing through the battery status information:

'Based on the response on this I am seeing so far, it appears to be a firmware or communication issue between the camera and this particular module type- and not an issue specific to your particular quickplate. I will be happy to report it as a bug to our Engineering team, and they can look into correcting the issue for an upcoming Firmware Release Build. Thanks!

Looks like we will have to wait for a firmware fix.

Ok…I was worried for about 5 seconds there. No way RED would cock that up. Like "Hey here's our new camera platform! You just need to reboot anytime you swap a display, no biggie right?"
