  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Presently the weapon upgrades are delivering with the DSMC Base Expander and unfortunately the Redvolt Expander with its XLR inputs is not yet ready. So how does anyone get an audio feed into this camera with the Base Expander? I see WC does not have a Weapon A Box and I assume the DSMC Base Expander audio 1/4" plug is wired differently to the Epic? How is anyone getting Audio into their Weapons? Is anyone getting audio in?
 
The WC a-box for the BM pocket cam appears to have the proper wiring. Dual xlr to single stereo 3.5mm.
 
My favorite way to get audio into the camera thus far has been using Sennheiser ew 100 ENG G3 transceivers feeding the signal directly from the mic or from the mixer/recorder.
 
Just heard back from WC and they state "The A-Box (DSLR) works with the Red Weapon with DSMC Expander Module." I will be ordering one of these. So I now believe that the DSMC expander is using a standard stereo 3.5mm phono Jack.
 
Would be nice to know the official TRS (tip, ring sleeve) assignments on the Weapon Base Expander. Particularly, if they are different than the unique assignments used for allowing a balanced connection with 48v phantom power on the Epic and Scarlet bodies.

Page 169 in the Weapon Manual if I'm not mistaken.
 
Manual has probably been updated so the information is now on page 172. Looking at this it looks like phantom power is no longer supported. If true it wont make the run and gun guys happy?

Frankly I would be happy to buy the Redvolt Expander but the way Red structures its pricing and packages it makes it a difficult economic decision. As I am upgrading I get the Base Expander along with the package. Now buying the Redvolt Expander is really tough as I now own a i/O box. Selling them will be difficult as most owners will come through the upgrade process and will own one. I would rather foresake the Base Expander and buy the $3,950 Redvolt Expander minus the $1,750 value of the Base Expander. This would be a win for everybody? Of course untill the Redvolt Expander actually starts delivery its all academic.

care to go into detail? work flow and set up, and why is it your favorite?

(...buying up audio gear and other goodies...I'm a little more than curious...)
 
They must have updated the manual as the audio schematic is on page 172 and it looks like a "standard" 3.5mm stereo plug but no Phantom power which will not please some.

Every weapon has a mic build in for hit and run and or audiosync!
 
You can use portable recorder/mix pre on your cameras back :)

In my case I always use dr70d-tascam recorder/mixer to record internally as well as externally. Just, connect the recorder 'S out put to camera. It means you will have 24 bit 96k in SD card audio source as well as 24 bit 48k sound in your video file too.

If you do doc, this set up will give you 4 channels

The recorder has a pre-mark, so I could name the video files and audio files very easily match together. And the sound quality out of the recorder want that bad either :)

The recorder can be powered by micro usb, so I generally power it up with 5v to usb adaptor :)

I'm guess today a few Woven CF Weapons got called up for upgrades. I had 3 calls and 2 emails asking all sorts of crazy things.

No. It doesn't blend. Don't do that :)
 
Can I check that there is no phantom power on the weapon? this could be a massive headache as I need to run sound through camera a fair bit. I bought the stereo A box from WC but didn't want to buy/spend the money on the RED Volt expander for XLR.
Please tell this isn't true. Apart from that I love the new size and the results of the pro-res look fantastic

It is true. Need to buy that, not available yet, to get phantom power...
