It's not the metal you're paying for. It's like putting a flag on the Moon . . . the cost is mostly transportation and has little to do with what the flagpole is made of ;-)

right, but the question was are u interested in W AL, if (!) the price tag is lower compared to the currently available options ? ;-)

Its already been discussed to death - a majority of the price is to do with the guts and build it wouldn't be a significant of a saving from alu to magnesium, from what I understand magnesium is the new aluminium for this range.

To be clear: it's not the metal you're asking about - you're asking for RED to lower their price on the flagship model to meet your personal comfort level.

Considering that for some users the "upgrade" price is $22k, or that the week after NAB the price increases pretty much arbitrarily for others by $10K, why the heck not?

the "guts" statement was in regards to MG vs. CF specs... Jarred also stated the MG is close in manufacturing costs to CF, because it takes forever to deal with...

(Assuming that) AL is faster to build, there is (almost) no R&D needed, so if the lines can process a AL build in 1/2 or 2/3 the time of a MG build, that is reducing costs...

I think you should maybe should consider that RED says that EPIC/Scarlet are amongst the current RED cameras.
But that weapon is top of the line. I'd be pretty surprised if they haven't kinda considered the aluminum option along the way.

Main cost is development.

Yeah, I dunno... I mean, the difference between the two now is huge likely because of processing as well; MG is $35k and CF is $50k... Now if there was an AL version for $20k, and was basically the "Scarlet" of the litter (but could still go to 8k VV for the sensor-only upgrade price), that'd be pretty awesome.

no Zeb, the body type of the MG|CF versions are simply features that I don't need... I'd pay 80K for the cam if it'd would do other things...

I also would love for them to offer a cheaper version w/o Prores, but clearly that's not gonna happen...

buy since they have already X amount of cam versions in the store, 2 more wouldn't hurt, if there was an improvement on the price... ;-)

they went down the path of modular builds - which I like - down to the nutty level that the new cam does not even have a DC in w/o at least one module, so the body type option would be interesting...

again, this is a hypothetical poll based on the outline that the costs would actually drop...

Would you ask apple to make there mac book pro in plastic so that it was cheaper? Like I totally get where your coming from and the price point is high but all the talk abut alu seems pointless to me, the camera has already been released, its something for red to consider for future releases but the band aid has already been pulled off for now, I can't see them changing anything based on polls or discussions.

I guess the thing is, if you drop a Weapon, weather its CF, or MG, or AL (or plastic), it's probably gonna get pretty f**ked up. If the material costs (and construction costs associated with that material) are actually substantial (5-10%? Hell even 2.5%?) then you're just inflating the cost needlessly. In other words, what are the real-world benefits of going MG over AL? If it's only a couple of ounces, but costs an additional 3.5k, that's not very value-added.

All that said, I highly doubt the cost difference between MG and AL is actually that much, otherwise I'm sure RED would have done it.

doesn't make sense. AL is not a bad choice at all... 99% of all current RED cams are AL... it's not "plastic" compared to MG|CF...

this is just a thread on a free forum, to give RED feedback... easy peasy...

if it turns out a lot of users would be interested, and the upgrades currently coming in are below what they hoped for, maybe there is a way...

RED has always listened, it's just feedback.

My life doesn't change whether they build AL or a cotton version... ;-) we live in the golden age of cameras, there is always an option to shoot on. And Dragon is a beast.

I love to drive a Ferrari. I ask them to put a small engine in the box to sell me for the price of Focus,
they won't do it do they ?.

The plastic comment was just and exaggeration to help my point, I get where you are coming from and I understand the logic of the thread, I'm just saying the reality of it happening is very slim.

Im all for free polls just throwing in my 2 cents :)

Given a magnesium bodied camera was released yesterday with a $3k price tag, my guess is it's not the magnesium you're paying for...

yes, and on the CALI freeway u will drive a max of 65mph with the Ford or the Ferrari... ;-))))

the 200mph the Italian Stallion can do don't matter if u don't need it or can't use it... ;-)
