  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We have time before WEAPON arrives

That is a great one question.. And yes it will. Weapon squeezes just a little bit more out of the Dragon sensor.

Thanks a million Jarred. I'm so glad I have a Dragon so I can get it Weaponized. :)

Damn... my one question would be, as a percentage, how much power does Weapon use compared to Epic Dragon? (And if that's not known yet, I'd substitute weight for power)

And then I'd ask about built-in NDs...
And then framerates... and then... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKNX6dieVcc :)

My one question is based on the former sensor size road map how soon do you anticipate releasing full frame 35 or 65mm format sized sensors? I am not sure what glass I should prepare myself for, and even if Weapon doesn't change the sensor size now I imagine that part of the new form factor is to deal with what comes after Weapon, which I realize is far away. My main thing is artistically I want Kowa anamorphics but Schneider Xenon Full Frame seems more practical IF we are still destined to go towards full frame formatting one day.. Not that this road map needs to be accurate of course, more so just curious as to if large format is still an end goal or did all the interest people had in frame rates change the road map? With the media blackout its just hard to tell where you guys will push the bleeding edge next and I am just trying to figure it out solely for planning purposes for accessories and such. Medium format is cheap now, same with old Lomo 65 stuff, already in PL. I just wonder if I should stock up now on Lecia, Hassleblads, all this medium format stuff or full frame stuff, these are the things that keep me thinking at night...

ps thanks for that answer, since indicating its the same size sensor kind of gives away enough info for me to at least understand current coverage...and guess more at what may have improved outside of dynamic range..

Remember Weapon is still a Dragon... it sits at the top of the Dragon Family. Scarlet Dragon, Epic Dragon, Weapon Dragon.

Interesting. I just assumed you could either upgrade to a Epic Weapon Dragon or Scarlet Weapon Dragon.

But I guess there was no Red One Epic MX etc. I wonder if this means end of the road for the Epic and Scarlet naming?

I think Weapon is a high speed camera using the same sensor with more range, that is my guess. Same sensor and better specs..

So on the current sensor configuration, since the photo site number is fixed, does the new information Jarred provided indicate that the optical filtering has been enhanced thus improving the signal to noise ratio? A measurable S/N reduction would yield a smoother highlight rolloff at a higher ISO setting?

one can assume beefed up specs, better boards, better bandwidth... they're gonna improve a/d processing and squeeze more juice outta the native sensor capture... similar to the Epic MX vs. R1 MX differences...

Nope.. Epic and Scarlet are here to stay. Weapon just gets added to the top. The Dragon family is a family of 3 now. Best, Bester, and Bestist. ;)

o yeah.. and there is more than one Weapon.

NAB, smab, no one cares about NAB. NAB is for TV salesman, not camera makers.

You'll feel so much better if you drop those beans you've hauling around

Right on all points. I think going forward we should make March the official camera month ( it kinda already just became that ) and move all our booths to SXSW.

I am only kinda kidding.

Jason Diamond I know you are in.

I think releasing all the info right now will be best for you and RED then you can take orders at NAB instead and focus on gambling and spending as much time as possible at the Spearmint Rhino

Thank for the Pro Res, you just made a lot DPs very very happy and hopefully richer. This is going to change the camera's relationship with producers.

As Dragon SNR was a limiting factor in usable DR, and the RC was reengineered after tweaking the Dragon PS, one could hypothesise that the next largest contributor to Digital noise has been targeted and re-engineered.

Guess: There will be a standard Weapon with N times reduction in low light noise, and there with be a 'Top' weapon that increases the 'brain power' to process HFR at N times the Epic Dragon max frame rate.

For the HFR to maintain pole position vs competitors ... I'm guessing the 'Top' will be 240fps 6k, and 1.5 stop lower light performance (new middle of the road OLPF) ... and just maybe sprinkling of H/W acceleration so that a FF image can be processed at 400Hz (in ProRes 4444XQ... and R3D)..with a lower resolution (ie @4K if needed) @ lower compression ratio used when writing to SSD.
