  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

WARNING: NON CINEMA LENSES BREATHE!

i have a whole set of contax too. However, I can find no where to convert to PL? How much and can you give me the contact please

If it's a whole set it might be cheaper to get a Canon mount and a decent adapter. Works well for me.

Brandon,

You should throw a couple takes of your video to show people exactly what you mean and if they find it unacceptable as well.

DANG!!!

I invested in a set of CONTAX ZEISS primes and had them cinevised to PL mount and they look amazing!

The glass is incredible and they look stellar on the RED One and EPIC...BUT

THEY BREATHE!!!!!!

We threw them on for a beauty shoot today with a follow-focus rig and they were UNUSABLE.

Even the slightest focus pull moved our matte box forward, looked bumpy and changed the frame line in a very visably unappealing way.

So, here's my question...

Are all the guys on here who sing the praises of non-cinema lenses actually pulling focus at all?

Do the ROKINON cinema lenses breathe too?

I dont even want to say how many tens of thousands of dollars we invested in this set..and now they seem pointless.

Your expertise and guidance is very appreciated.

Thanks

I would think Duclos Lenses would have no trouble converting to PL if it's possible.

Matthew Duclos in on these forums or you could call them up.

And even if they did, I'd just take the breathing out in post with a small ZOOM effect. Which will take me about 2 seconds to do.

Mark,

Would you mind explaining this more? How do you do it with post?

Keyframed scaling. DaVinci Resolve for example has very good scaling.

worse than breathing is the purple fringing/ CA of the Contax line. I tested them against the classic superspeed PL line and finally had to admit: Cine Lenses are 1-2 levels higher....

I won't argue that there isn't color fringing, but it depends so much on what year the lens was made. I would imagine you'd find a similar spread in behavior between Super Speed Mark I's and Mark III's.

I think the only fair comparison would to compare Contax and Super Speeds that had similar serial numbers - that way you'd know you're comparing the optics, and not different eras in coatings.

Bingo.

Also, there are some lenses in the Contax line that have poorer CA performance compared to other ones. Off the top of my head, the most noticeable one I know of is the 100mm F2.0, but that's only a problem if you're shooting wide open. For the most part though, given how old these lenses are, they deal with CA decently. Step down to 2.8 or greater and it disappears.

Or start at 2.8 (Sonnar) and it's very decent from WO ;-)

Cheaper too!

Nick,

Ship me you Contax set and I'll do a side by aide comparison between Contax and Mark I Superspeeds / B-Speeds. :)

I'm booked through the second week in March, but might be able to squeeze it in during an afternoon sometime. I also have a Leica R set, so I could compare all three in terms of CA / purple fringing. I have to say, I'm not used to seeing it on my early Superspeeds. Throw on a Leica R and it jumps out like crazy (in comparison). Would be interesting to see where the Contax fall.

That would be so cool.
Looking forward to seeing your results!
