  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

WARNING! Do not use Wooden Camera Easy Top Plate!

Any recent updates on this? I was planning to purchase the new Easy Top, but am a bit freaked out by this thread...

Updated version with no battery is not only working, but the only Wooden Camera piece that is officially approved by Red - http://www.red.com/third-party-accessories

I own the updated version and have been using it for about 2 months now 2-3days/week without issue.

It also fried my RED 7 inch monitor...cost me nearly $1000 to repair at RED....it was costly, I took it off and not using it any more...

I have the original release. What am I looking for if it’s breaking? What are the tell tale signs of a defective unit?

Is this only a top plate issue? Or is this across the board with other electronic WC products? I'm heard people having issues with the POGO today, and I am curious if that extends to the WC Gimbal bracket and P-Tap cables. I don't want to fry my camera...

Have been using the WC Top Plate since it was released. I updated to the no battery board when it became available. I have had no problems.

So its safe to use if you upgrade it to the no battery version?

I had a terrible time with the Passthrough Top Plate. I had the camera fixed twice and the second time it had to go to Red HQ in the US (I'm in the UK). Since removing the Top Plate I haven't had a single issue. I was able to send the passthrough plate back to Wooden Camera but they are adamant that it should work perfectly.

I've had no issues with my Wooden Camera Pogo adapter though, which is strange as it's using the same bits and bobs presumably!?!

Hey Boris, strange as the Passthrough Top Plate should be passive, maybe it developed a short internally??? what had to be fixed inside the camera?

Same here - been using the WC Top Plate (no battery board). I have had no problems at all.

Hi chaps!
URGENT UPDATE !!! My WC DSMC2 TOP PLATE (no battery board) just started making serious troubles!
Just discovered when I'm pushing/pulling or giving any force to top handle fixed to WC Top Plate (low shot or just carrying camera) - it makes unwanted signal problems (noisy image, artifacts on RED LCD/RED EVF) !!!
Checked contact points - everything looks ok!
4x screws fixed firmly WC Top Plate to DSMC2 body.
I believe the problem related to WC POGO Connector inside TOP PLATE - loosing contact with any pressure applied to the Plate which can lead to RED LCD or EVF damages !!!
Be careful guys as it could be very expensive repair :(

No difference even if Top Handle is fixed on rear of Top Plate :(

Thanks for sharing. Doesn't sound good.

WC products are some of the best u can get, I know Ryan personally and I have always received the best customer service in the industry. Talk to the team at WC and they will fix any issues you have.

We have had the Easy Top since the 1st iteration with battery - I believe it lead to needing to replace the IOB Board at a cost of $1750. The screen would show tearing at start up and occasionally during shooting. It was driving us crazy. I thought it was the monitor cable, the connection, the top plate or the monitor. I sent the monitor back to Red, it was fine. I sent the Easytop back to WC and they said it was fine. Finally send in in our Epic-W and got it fixed. So frustrating. I did the upgrade on the EasyTop but I am reticent to keep using it now that I see its a recurring issue.

Just a further warning to people using or thinking to use this top plate.
I have the Easy Top (V2) with the new design sans battery.

My top pogo now no longer works either and i am currently talking to Red regarding getting it fixed. The connection with the "Easy Top" was shody at best from new, with image tearing and bad connections from the start and now no image. The monitor turns on to backlight only now when using the Red pogo to lemo adapter (side pogo still works with same setup), which makes me suspect the video pins have been short circuited. Have troubleshooted many solutions and the Top Pogo is just dead. Wooden Camera support, although helpful, are definitely downplaying this issue and saying they only know of two issues of this occurrence and make it sound like regardless of the situation, it is not their problem. Basically "certified third party" means jack sh*t in this case and affords no protection when these parts go wrong.

I would HIGHLY suggest that no-one buys or uses this plate and if they do currently and want to maintain all the bolting points to remove all electronics and use it without the WC internal circuits.

Is the pass-through version safe?

Bumping this question up about the pass thru plate. Anyone know if the pass thru version is safe? My 5" red monitor fritzed recently for no apparent reason (although it seems like they do tend do, which is a different story) and I just want to make sure I'm not putting my next monitor at risk.
