  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Voigtländer 35mm f 1.2 Nokton with IMS on RED

Sanjin,

just to be sure that I understood this thing well...

If I remove the whole PL mount and install IMS system with Leica-M mount on my RED I'll be able to use all my Leica M lenses.

Is that right?

Thanks for your answer

Rami

That's right.

That's mad! Shooting a film on Leica lenses!... Sooo coool! Explain more! Where's that mount found?

IMS Camera Mount for RED One

More tests are coming soon.

BTW, I'm till Sunday evening in Paris, Le Marais, xx, rue Elzevir, 75003 Paris.

Hey Sanjin, I have followed your tests with great interest, and I am seriously considering the IMS route. I know the warranty issue from red is stopping many but having a camera without a birger mount and no lens to use is worse. Plus I am in Europe so logistically it makes sense and I like supporting local euro business.

Can you explain this statement to me from the website?

"The replacement of the whole RED front is not needed anymore. Only the original RED mount needs to be replaced by the P+S Technik IMS, no modification to the camera housing has to be done and no cables need to be cut."

What bit of the Red mount comes off now? The same as the birger, or the red nikon mount?
ims-front-red.gif

this image reveals that the whole front comes off!
Is that the case with your setup?

Once the IMS is installed can the red front be easily replaced?

Keep up the good work with the tests.

Cheers

Michael

Hi Michael,

The first I have to say that I am not able and do not have a right to give any comment on the P+S Technik statement(s).

The best is to call them or sent email and ask.

I can talk as an IMS-RED user only.

The most valuable thing with IMS is that gives you a chance to easy and fast SWAP between different mounts, for example PL and Nikon, PL and Panavision lenses, PL and Leica-R or Leica-M, PL and Canon FD, PL and Contax, etc...

IMS should make a video demo... We don't get it at all... "You can do this", "it allows you to do that"... What the hell is this exactly? How does that work? It sounds great, but it's a big mystery?!!! Is it a "versatile adapter" on which we can put "various mount rings" to swap from one lens type to another different type just like switching from PL to PL, without screwing and unscrewing stuff on the camera for hours? I shot an email to them... Waiting for a reply... They seem to have a pretty good variety of dirrerent adaptors... If it's the case, it's pretty damn huge! It would mean that you could use almost ANY type of lens with a RED and swap like it's a hood cap... :w00t:

I found a complete price list of the mount and lenses adapters ZGC website here:

But a contradiction with the P&S website regarding the warranty issue... ZGC says on their website: "EXTREMELY IMPORTANT NOTICE: Using the P+S Technik IMS RED Mount will void the warranty on the RED One camera. With your purchase of this item ZGC will require that you sign a waiver."

That's strange...

Although I admit their system looks quite fantastic and brilliant to use ANY type of lens and mount with the Red without heavy mount modification. Looks like once the mount is installed, a bit like the Nikon mount, you just use the right ring adapter and screw your lens on, whether it's Arri PL Mount, Panavision Mount, BNC-R Mount, Professional F-Mount, Nikon F-Mount, Canon EF-Mount, Canon FD-Mount, Contax Mount, Leica-R Mount or Leica-M Mount.

I'd seriously consider that over the Nikon mount (Sorry Doug) since you can then swap back to PL in a second, without unscrewing and rescrewing it all...

I'd love to see that in action. Anyone got that and could post a video?

IMS warranty isssue is still not officially solved between RED and P+S Technik.

IMS works very simple and easy like this:

It has one base mount and several adapters from a famous cine and still lens brands like an Arri PL, Panavision PV, Nikon F, Canon EOS (dumb) and FD, Leica R and M, Contax, etc...

So you swap your lens on a particular adapter and then swap that adapter with your lens on IMS mount.

That's all.

You're right next door to me! Too bad I just saw that now!

Lewis,

I'm back today in Vienna.

It was a wonderful week for me in Paris like always.

Maybe next time when I would check it out several locations to shoot in Paris.

Sensor of Leica M8 is 27x18 mm.

Sensor of RED ONE Mysterium is 24.4x13.7 mm.

There is no any vinetting or similar.

Have look at the video or frame grabs shot with Voigtländer 35mm f 1.2 Nokton that is Leica-M mount lens with IMS on RED that you could find on this tread.

Very cool,

If you go to www.zeiss.com/photo

you can download the spec sheets on a ZM 35mm biogon lens, as well as a spec sheet on a distagon ZF 2.0/35 lens.

If you compare where the sensor dimension would hit the illumination curves for both lenses, surprisingly there is not much difference in their E values.

Traditionally Biogon type lenses have vastly less distortion than distagon lenses. In photogrammetry (3d measurement) applications we like the low distortion, but in the past this has meant that one has had to put up with vignietting (however its spelt) and slight loss of sharpness and contrast as compared to the distagon type lenses. In lens design it was thought that you could either have high contrast and high reolution but not low distortion in the same lens, and in the biogons, low distortion but not high res and high contrast. With the new digitar lenses from Schneider this gap seems to be closing but for even light on a larger sensor (35mm plus) a radially gradated filter is needed. We are looking to do 3d work with the RED one using ZM lenses and Schneider digitar lenses.

Does anyone have distortion curve plots for the Zeiss/arri master primes?
