VOGUE CHINA

As to how Epic works, I don't know I don't have one yet :)

 Just quoting what Ted was saying in a video I'm unable to find a link to. Was a recent one though. But, as The Man says, everything is subject to change.

To me, Red one like transformers, looks great, the model will become more colourful in front of Red camera.

BTW, from what I recall, shooting motion with Epic, you press the shutter release and it 'tags' the frame. That doesn't make a separate file, AFAIK, it just tags the motion file to allow you to find your select easier.

HALF press of the shutter button ( i.e. record button ). It is a 2 position button like on DSLR's.

What else are they doing with this footage?

What's the point of shooting on red then delivering it in poor quality web videos?

Cory

I believe stills are being pulled from the footage and being used as full page spreads in the hardcopy mag...Jarred?

I think the webvideo is really just gravy. Though one would think they could at least upload something at 720p

Hehe...I'm wondering if they aren't referencing the Pier59 studio as being millions of dollars. Which would make a lot more sense...

thanks for the translation :)

Ah wait... Didn't Epic shoot 120fps at 5K? In that case the relative shutter would be sufficient to freeze the majority of all the frames in the shot right? So as long as you would shoot slowmo, you have proper stills as well.. Problem with Red One right now is that it is limited to shooting in 2K mode, which makes most shots too soft and limited for print. Is that it? Did I win any prize with this answer to my own question?

Best regards,

Sherlock

The video looks pretty strobey, so I think they just used a small shutter angle to get perfect stills, without caring much about smooth video motion, which is probably fine in many cases.

Well they are using the stills for print publication, I imagine, which would be reason enough to shoot Red. But the broadband infrastructure in China is really hit or miss right now, so they are probably uploading low res videos to make them more accessible to the domestic mass market.

But I agree, higher res videos would be nice. :)

I worked on these as one of the editors, the colorist, and the red workflow manager. What isn't mentioned anywhere is that this was all done in one (very long) day. All of these pieces were shot, edited, graded, and delivered for iPad in rapid fire succession. We had a Red Rocket - but it was being more of a pain than it was worth - so we just farmed the renders.

As to why we were shooting RED - speed and quality were of utmost importance (as it is in most NYC beauty projects) - and Kenneth wanted to be able to pull stills. Most material was shot 3K, with a high relative shutter (we really needed the Briese lights that we had because of this). Camera was one of B2Pro's MX bodies.

Everything was delivered for iPad at 1280X720 - and it looks like it was reprocessed again for the web. I would love to see these up on the internets without multigenerational compression. Trust me - they look a lot better than what is in this player - they also seem to have done a color pass on the H.264 videos afterwards to wash them out. I did all of the original color work in Apple Color against the R3D's after bouncing the Color project to Clipfinder 2.5.

I do wish I had DaVinci and Storm at the time... next time!
