  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VOGUE CHINA

Sweet! RED continues to grow on an international scale. Ain't no stoppin' the revolution!

Cool. I was at a Paul Weller concert last night (in the audience) and fantasising about shooting with an Epic at 120fps, tagging images as I went and capturing all those fleeting moments of lighting and performance nuance.

Damn me and my long winded replies. I was almost the first reply!:emote_head_explode:

Seeing stuff like that makes me proud to be danish (as Kenneth) AND to own a RED. Nice.

Wow. That text looks amazingly sharp. You got that in motion as well? ;)

Nice work for the resume!

Yeah, the word "Sugar" in her hair is really sharp, must have been hard to get it to stay there perfectly level and still while taking the picture!

Actually, how does the motion + stills work? Does it take stills of motion frames in a different shutter speed? Or does magic motion make the motion always look good despite of shutterspeed? Do you press a dedicated photo button?

You can either go to Still mode and Motion Mode back and forth via the pressing of a dedicated button,
or you can assign a frame during the shooting of Motion, while shooting, so to have it marked for later extraction,
this on Epic, but with R1 you shoot Motion and then extract the Tiff.

Thanks Ketch. And that one frame you mark during the motion shoot can then be made in the different shutter speed set in stills mode..?

Nice! This was Red1 MX or Epic?

So much is still going on with Epic and Scarlett, as far as marking the Still to be taken while Shooting Motion, and so much to understand form that, only the BOys at RED will be able to tell as more as they continue to progress with that.

Hey Ketch, how's it going?

Actually with R1 you don't have to shoot motion, you can shoot in single frame mode. Then you can go with a fast shutter and you don't have to spend hours scrubbing through footage looking for good frames to extract.

Well, as we're talking about wanting higher shutter speeds for stills than is the norm in motion, in the case where you're effectively shooting motion as a means to have a stills camera with a 120fps motor drive(!!!), you can set whatever shutter speed/angle you like. When shooting motion for motion, you tend to shoot slower speeds to decrease the between-frame moment, which gives blurred motion and lessens stutter. But in stills, that's not an issue, so you simply set a higher shutter speed.

I guess it's the situation where you want to extract both stills and motion from the same stream that it becomes an issue. With Epic I think HDRx/Magic Motion™ may have a solution for us but, if the slow stream of the HDRx dual stream is to be useable in motion, that would indicate the fast stream will be underexposed. Hmmm.

BTW, from what I recall, shooting motion with Epic, you press the shutter release and it 'tags' the frame. That doesn't make a separate file, AFAIK, it just tags the motion file to allow you to find your select easier.

It would be a very cool trick if Red could use the HDRx technology to allow single, higher shutter speed (and therefore, higher ISO to maintain exposure) stills to be extracted on the run but I bet, the moment you looked at the motion footage, the perfect stills frame would be the motion frame before or after your stills frame :banghead:

Shane - yes, I was referring to the situation where you want both usable motion footage and you want to be able to extract stills too - in that case you have to go with a slower shutter speed for the motion. But if you're really just doing a still shoot, then shoot in single frame mode. Saves you a ton on drive space and searching time.

As to how Epic works, I don't know I don't have one yet :)

Revolution or counter-revolution? Which do you get when affordable and compelling means of creativity and communication become universally available? Barrel of a gun or lens of a camera?
