App: Vizzywig 4K (coming soon)
Device: iPhone 5S
Lens: Moondog Labs Anamorphic
Stabilizer: Swift M3
Data Rate: 576 Mb/sec
(Yes, that's 576 Megabits per second)

YouTube Link added in thread below. Make sure to change the resolution on the YouTube player to 4K using the gear icon in the lower right and allow it to fully reload the 4K before you tap play. You don't need a 4K monitor to see the difference.

Hi Michael,

Seen the new IPhone, and it looks crippled, with no 4k, Steve's philosophy of Steve knows best. I would like to ask about more performance details about your new software (codec, data rate, 4k fps, bit depth, pixel format?) on the Iphone 6's and if there is any ipod touch version)? Any details available for the time being would be appreciated. Also, I don't want to convert over to the I ecosystem yet, so will there be 4k versions for other systems (such as Firefox OS, linux/Ubuntu mobile, windows, android)?

Thanks again,

Wayne.

It's important to understand that Vizzywig 4K is capturing full resolution still images at 24 photos per second and recording synched audio in a separate process. It is not recording video in the traditional sense. The entire workflow is based around still frames so the absolute highest quality is maintained and preserved for long term archival purposes.

This is why the data rate for VZ4K is so high. Every single still image can be blown up to poster size and printed. As mentioned above, 576 Mb/second. Here is a still frame to give you an idea:

I'm not saying there isn't utility here, but I am saying that I think a price tag of $1k is out of touch with reality.

The reality is the world's fastest full 4K workflow. Pull a small phone out of your pocket, shoot four or five true 4K clips, trim, rearrange, add transitions, lower thirds, titles and credits in 4K and export and upload to YouTube or Vimeo in 4K in 15 minutes without ever touching a data card, laptop, mouse or NLE.

We have all spent more than $1K on a single data card and 10 times that on a single lens or tripod.

I'm seeing vertical shake in this video, near the end. Is it just my Youtube playback doing this ?

I've seen the glitch you are referring to but it doesn't seem to be the same every time so I think it could be YouTube or the PC. However, keep in mind that the YouTube 4K is compressed and they may even be adjusting the frame rate or keyframes for streaming. Soon I will post a DropBox link with a sample 4K still image sequence (and audio track) so you can see the actual quality we are capturing. The still frame above is a good example.

The challenge is the throughput. We have not been able to find ANY other mobile device or tablet on any platform that can capture 8MP+ resolution still images at more than 10 frames per second sustained. Literally, ONLY the iPhone 5S (with our carefully engineered code) can achieve 24 still photos per second sustained at 8MP+ sensor resolution. There are tons of touchpoints in hardware and software that have to be humming perfectly in order to capture AND successfully write to disk 72MB (576Mb) per second of imagery.

Believe me, if this was possible on ANY other Android, iOS or Windows Phone device, we would be all over it. As of right now, we aren't even sure the iPhone 6 will be able to do it. It's not just about the processor or the sensor. It's write speed, memory buffers and much more.

Yes, professional equipment is expensive. However, with $1k I'm most of the way towards a few different 4K cameras. Better yet, the 4k conscious cellphone shooter could just buy an actual 4K video phone.

Any info on the bitrate and compression on that Panasonic phone ? If it's 100+ megabits h264 or hevc I'm all over it .

Michael,

Very interesting! Could you please post the DropBox link?

Thanks.

Michael,

3264 x 2448: iPhone 5s back camera max still size.
3840 x 2160: UHD standard.

The vertical is covered, but you're a bit short on the Horizontal.
Is the video produced at 3264 pixels wide or somehow interpolated to the full 3840 pixels of UHD?

The so called "4K video phones" are not achieving anything remotely close to what Vizzywig 4K is doing on an iPhone 5S. Look, we develop for Android and Windows phone too. Don't you think I want to add platforms and devices? No other device can capture the 576Mb/sec that I believe is required for true 4K quality. We are capturing AND storing to disk more data per FRAME than those so-called 4K Android phones are per SECOND.

You guys all know I have been on RedUser for 6 years. You know I have owned the Red One, Red One MX, EPIC-M, EPIC-X, EPIC monochrome AND the Epic Dragon. I am not some random iPhone developer that doesn't know 4K. I am very picky about image quality and I wouldn't call something 4K that is not 4K. If you think an Android phone is shooting acceptable quality 4K video, we have significant differences in our definitions of quality.

This is another tool or accessory in the professional 4K toolkit or workflow. I am just saying, if you are serious about 4K, carry an iPhone 5S in your pocket with Vizzywig 4K at all times because a kitted-out EPiC jar won't fit there next to your keys and loose change. But, I can guarantee you that you can cut Vizzywig 4K still frame sequences in with your EPIC footage and it will look beautiful. It's not 48fps and it's not 6K and you can only record about 20 minutes before your device is full but trust me, it is really freaking awesome. It is a REAL tool, not a toy.

My preferred setting in Vizzywig 4K is our 4K ANA mode which was built for the Moondog Labs Anamorphic lens. This enables us to use the FULL height and width of the iPhone 5S sensor to capture 16x9 4.5K @ 4,350 x 2448 then we actually subsample or scale that DOWN to get 3840 x 2160. We can also support wider formats and preserve that 4,350 pixels wide or scale it up slightly in an update coming soon.

In regular 4K mode without the Moondog Lens, we do scale up the horizontal slightly and crop the vertical. However, we are capturing essentially uncompressed raw still frames so that more than makes up for the resolution that would be lost in motion compression. You have to see it to understand how still image capture outperforms motion capture in resolution.

I will send one of these lenses and the Swift M3 handheld gyro stabilizer to the first person on RedUser that sees this thread and buys Vizzywig 4K in the next 24 hours. It's the ultimate, lightweight, 4K setup!

Oh, I didn't realize that the iPhone 5S' camera is actually 4350 pixels high. The specs don't show that.
Anyway, looks like a breakthough in cellphone video quality.
Good job, man.

I'm waiting for an Android phone that can handle the speed required to capture this much information for sustained periods of time.
We'll surely need at least 128GB microSD card (and a fast one) to capture enough footage at this high quality.

I have an LG G2 with a mod that enables it to shoot UHD @ 30fps @ 30mbps. This means 1mbit / frame.
Your app captures 24MBit / frame (if I calculate correctly), so that's 24 times the data rate that I'm getting. Astounding.

How long can your app keep capturing stills like that (if storage space is not the limiting factor)?

Here is a CLIP FOLDER from a handheld shot on the beach. I should have used a tripod but notice the detail on the hair blowing in the wind. Click the 3 dots in the lower right of the DropBox viewer to view the originals in full resolution or just download.

Also, I should note, Vizzywig 4K has both a JPG quality setting and a 4K Export Quality setting (for the H.264 4K video export). This dropbox still image sequence example was shot using the "50" quality level to save space which is about 28MB/sec instead of 72MB/sec with "80" quality. If you look at the still image I posted on the first page of this thread, that was shot using the higher quality JPG setting for the still images. (Pasted again below). Make sure you control click and choose "Open in New Window" then zoom.

I try to avoid comparisons with products that aren't shipping yet. This won't be out until November or December and will cost $1,000. A used iPhone 5S costs $350 and it's available now. However, I do know that when it does ship, it will NOT be able to burst still images at 24 frames per second and will NOT be able to sustain 576Mb/sec so it will have to use plenty of compression tricks along the path.
