  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Vista Vision Update.

Testing a set of Zeiss Otus primes (courtesy of the fine folk at Duclos Lenses) on a VV with my AL RED EF mount and it cut both edges of the full 40.96 frame top to bottom. I'd estimate about 1.5mm cropped on each side, leaving roughly 38mm Horizontal clean, all 21.6mm Vertical was clean. Looks like I'll need to upgrade my Canon mount. It also means the Otus set is back in the running for my personal kit.

Ah, crap... I was not aware of that... Now I’ve got two mounts I need to replace or modify. I wonder if it’s possible to shave the inside of the Ti Canon mount to fix the obstruction of the image circle or best to sell and get the VV mount. Hmm... sounds like something to ponder and investigate over the weekend.

Blair,

Is it possible to post a frame of this test? Was the edge vignette only in 8K FF or would it also be encroaching on 8kHD? Thankyou

The customer upgrade program for non-dsmc cameras ends September 28th, if you have a DSMC2 you will have a bit more time than that... but come october and the RED ARMOR-X program begins that includes sensor swapping and that's only open to Weapon owners with some weight on if you already have one before the program begins.

Jarred,

I own a Weapon Mg Dragon. Is it considered DSMC2? Is the deadline the 28th or is there more time? Trying to figure it out based on your post and Bomb Squad info. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat. There's a quote somewhere that says we would have a bit longer than the dsmc1 folks. This upgrade deadline really seems geared toward people who are on dsmc1. Honestly I've personally decided at this point magnesium is a powerful rare unicorn in the lineup.

+1

Agreed.... Weapon-MG is a beast! Anyone who still has it and got it for that original price point in the beginning got one hell of a deal. Jarred's original offer to go from epic Dragon to weapon with the $5K credit plus the modules/aks for free got to take advantage of the single greatest deal I think Red ever offered... Well, except for maybe the Red One at inception date...

You are in DSMC2 if you have a Weapon MG. Don't fret, you're good! :)

In the future I'd like to go to VV, but I 100% agree with you about the MG. It's awesome and has great "bang for the buck" value, IMO.

FWIW, my decision to lay out roughly $20K more to go Carbon instead of Mg at NAB 2015 was to support the VV sensor. Adding in the $10K pre-order price of the VV sensor, I put $30K more on the table than a Weapon Mg buyer. Sure, I've had higher frame rates and lower compression ratios to show for it, but that delta alone sure hasn't earned enough to offset $30K. After two and half years of waiting for the VV sensor (I threw down in the first few minutes, hoping to get it sooner than later), hindsight clearly shows it was not a great financial decision for my business. To be clear, I don't blame RED - we were warned from day one that it would be a slow roll. As a cinematographer, I'm still stoked to shoot the larger format - whenever I get my VV. Good thing I'm an artist at heart, and not a CPA ;-)

Cheers - #19

Your day is coming soon my friend :)

Is there an official word that DSMC2 weapon Mg will still have an upgrade program after today? Bomb squad doesn't know but jarred's post says we will have more time. I understand things change so I just want to get the correct info before making a decision today. Thanks!
