  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Vista Vision Update.

Thanks. When you say "Weapon CF" do you mean Weapon 8K Helium?

So there will NOT be an upgrade path from Weapon Mg to VV???

Are there published specs for the VV sensor/camera?

There are both CF 8K Helium and 6K Dragon Weapons.

No, that has been clear since day one. Only CF Weapon take take VV.

Scroll down on the link I sent you.

This is not addressed on the page. All upgrades for magnesium relate to helium. Unless the answer is "no" because it is not listed.

Original question: Can magnesium go to carbon weapon (dragon) instead of weapon helium for the same price pre-sept 28?

Brent had answered this on another thread a month ago, and I believe the statement was you could "pay the delta between Magnesium and CF Weapon Dragon", so $30k up to $49k, about $19k difference.

I know how you're probably feeling, I'm the same way. I really love the Dragon sensor (and really want to go VV Dragon someday), and wish we could just swap materials and boards at a lower cost.

Helium looks great, but I can't justify moving to a sensor I just don't want (due to smaller sensor and reduced fps) just to get the body and boards for my eventual jump to VV :/ Maybe RED will open this path up someday for us though, as I think they'd get a lot of us Mg owners!

All fair and good, my friend. There are a lot of paths, yes. And I/we cannot say what is the right choice for each person. All I can say is that Sep 28 is the last chance for folks to move from DSMC1 to DSMC2. If you are already DSMC2, say EPIC-W, you will have a path to WEAPON after that date. And EPIC-W is certainly no slouch in of itself.

Sorry about the basic questions - I've been out of the RU loop for a bit. After poking around here and on YouTube, seems like the VV is for those who want to go large and cinematic and the Helium is better suited for available light situations with compact lenses. Helium is a better fit for me but I can see why if you're going to the Moon, you would bring a VV with a Primo lens ;-)

... but come october and the RED ARMOR-X program begins that includes sensor swapping and that's only open to Weapon owners with some weight on if you already have one before the program begins.

Been offline for a bit boys so be gentle. Does this mean a Weapon 8K Helium purchased today, via upgrade, would qualify for a VV size sensor upgrade in the future if RED Armor X is purchased? Thot you couldn't fit that bad boy sensor size in the S35 housing

Amazing News!

Im a little behind schedule, but looking Forward!

Waiting to see how this all shakes out. I love my CF Weapon, love Helium, have been in line for VV since the first 30 seconds it was offered at NAB however long ago... But I’m just not shooting much these days. I’m buried up to my eyeballs in other projects and work and my poor camera sits here looking at me much of the time. If not for the VV upgrade looming in some ethereal future plane, I would have already unloaded the camera and just borrowed/rented a Dragon or Helium on the occasion it’s been needed. Trying to figure out how to move forward and would love to know how this is all going to work in terms of finally getting VV, option to keep the Helium sensor, sensor swap programs, etc.. In many ways it does not make sense for me to keep sitting on the camera, but at the same time if I sell it off for the time being, I may be losing an advantageous position within the RED program. I’ve briefly explored consignment rentals, but it’s a tough sell right now... Everyone would be tripping over themselves to get it if I already had VV, but as just another Helium Weapon, the interest just isn’t there. Or at least not strong enough for me to send it off for little return while other people add more wear and tear to my gear.

October needs to hurry up and get here....

The Weapon VV queue really puts having to wait 12 days for the second batch of D850's in perspective :D

Although since there's no evidence of production problems or massive unexpected demand in this case, I still think Nikon blew it and announced a date they couldn't deliver on.

First, awesome news on the new batch of VV sensors!

Question for Jarred or Brent: I thought that I remembered early talk of a new Canon mount and OLPF to accommodate the larger sensor? Are those items still in the works?
Not that I need to run out and gobble them up now as I am a May timestamp, just trying to wrap my head around the other bits and pieces that I will eventually need.

Thanks again guys, exciting times!

How much will it cost for VV? from helium weapon 8K?

Jarred said at NAB 2015 that the $10K deal for VV would be "at least double" in the future. That said, IMHO there is pretty good chance that in 2018 there will be a RED Sensor 4.0 which is next generation beyond Dragon in a VV form factor. That's why he mentioned the upcoming "swapable sensor" feature. Those with a NAB 2015 Forged Carbon who made deposits for the VV then will get priority. Those with Weapon 8K are next in line since their internals are up to speed with the VV bandwidth needs. That's why you'll want to upgrade to full Weapon 8K by September 28th.

There is a VV Mg Canon Mount. I bought one when I received my VV. There are VV OLPFs too.
Thanks for that Stacey, much appreciated.
As a side note, some of the stuff that Clark shot with your camera looks amazing.
I sure am looking forward to getting that email from Red.

Wish I had known that all this time... would have made waiting a little more acceptable.

The VV Mg Canon Mount is refined a bit over the Ti Canon Mount. It’s not necessary if you already have a Canon Mount for your Weapon. If you’re looking to pick up a Canon mount, especially for the VV sensor, then this is the one to get if you have the budget.

I’m sure RED will re-open VV orders once they have sensor production sorted out to where they can get caught up. And it will most likely be a lot more expensive. It’s been commented before that when/if orders do re-open, it will be more than double the early bird NAB price. Jarred also commented in the past that they should be charging a whole lot more than that. With the low yield on these sensors up to now, I can only imagine what these VV sensor upgrades truly cost.

Testing a set of Zeiss Otus primes (courtesy of the fine folk at Duclos Lenses) on a VV with my AL RED EF mount and it cut both edges of the full 40.96 frame top to bottom. I'd estimate about 1.5mm cropped on each side, leaving roughly 38mm Horizontal clean, all 21.6mm Vertical was clean. Looks like I'll need to upgrade my Canon mount. It also means the Otus set is back in the running for my personal kit. [Digression alert] The Sigma CINE line feels like too good a deal to pass up, especially with so many more focal lengths. Also the design is well suited to a personal kit where a smaller lens, particularly one that distributes focus rotation smartly to make pulling on the barrel manageable, even without the touch of a safecracker beyond 10' ;-)

As much as I prefer PL, the world of EF is too full of interesting glass to ignore... Yes, certainly a first world problem. (Almost) Every time I am about to post about how hard it is to wait for my VV, I stop myself and think what a dick move that is. FWIW, it's not really all about me, really - I can't wait to hear more reactions from RedUsers who get a taste of the VV format. For starters, it has such a powerful impact on geometry within the frame, particularly with the right combination of focal length and object distances. It also makes it viable to use wider shots even when the facial reaction has to play. Moreover, it has the perceptual property of making the viewer feel closer to the action while still encompassing the same frame as S35 would from farther back.

Cheers - #19
