Hey all. . .

Vimeo is launching a new service that allows a 90-10 pay split. My concerns are that I've had rotten luck with playing Vimeo videos (does anyone else have this problem?) and that I wonder what sorts of piracy protections this new service will have.

Any thoughts?

Stephen

Where's the information for this program? Didn't seem obvious on vimeo.com anyway.

A real shame that they forcing user registration in order to view paid content. Other then that yea great platform.

We use vimeo pro every day. A Lot.

Occassionally it gets very slow uploading; occassionally it's a little flakey transcoding - but 90% of the time it works great and our clients like it. It works better than any other platform we've tried, including YouTube. I'm certainly inclined to try it for selling content as soon as the opportunity arrises.

Hey there, Stephen! One thing to keep in mind is that you have to be a Vimeo PRO subscriber, which is $200 a year. I agree that it's a bummer that a potential buyer has to register for a Vimeo account in order to purchase.

That said, the 90/10 split still looks like a fantastic deal. I'm going to be keeping an eye on this for my own projects. The video quality on Vimeo is, to my eye, significantly better than Youtube.

While it's truly commendable that they are offering a 90/10 split, there is a reason for it...

Youtube, will improve greatly their Image viewing quality, it has to, fact remains that Youtube still offers and unbeatable platform were any video at any time can spread in to the Global public like a wild fire, hence infinite greater possibility to capitalize on your Pay per View content.

While this seems like a noble effort I think the biggest problem is that your paid content is appearing on a platform with massive amounts of free content.

Imagine it this way. What if iTunes started as free service then asked you to pay for music when a million free things were available?

vimeo is desparate.

Transmitting video over the Internet is expensive and they need money badly.

Their service has gotten worse and more expensive and the GUI overhaul is terrible. What will happen to their Apple TV liscense when they start competing with apple on apples hardware.

I think vimeo will end or be purchased.

But Ketch, they don't offer any payment beyond advertising which does not amount to much unless you are getting millions of hits. It's certainly not going to equal 1$ per view on youtube. Hopefully Youtube will also create a service like this where we can specify the price. I like the concept for Odemax, and having the ability to charge more for 4k.

Online is starting to look like a viable place for content creators, can't wait to see what the next 5 years holds. It will be nice to see networks making deals to source content off online sites like this and stream it as part of thread or broadcast.

Agree with David, too hard to change peoples perception of what youtube and vimeo brands offer. They need a totally different brand, name and site to offer primarily paid content.

Ketch, do you know anyone making any money from youtube (besides google)?

David, like any content, you still need to market it properly. To assume you make a series or film and that people will visit is wishful. You need to get the word out there, it's nice now to be able to direct people to a place to watch it where your in control. Timescapes is a brilliant example of this. Lots of reviews, articles and word-of-mouth has been created.

Youtube and vimeo are billboards to drive people to paid content. Should be view strictly as advertising but not as a viable way to acquire direct dollars on a per screening basis.

Who has made one penny on the tip jar?

I think vimeo is on the way out because they rent their server space, resist advertising and have one revenue stream, us, the user, who pay a subscription for a service that chokes almost very time I watch a video.

Research shows that people tune out within 8 seconds if a video freezes. 8 seconds! In other words, to most people it's more important that the video play, than if the video is HD.

Money are made in Youtube by literally 100's of thousands of Youtoobers worldwide... However, currently the only money made in Youtube are via advertisement only.... Which of course to make any money you'll need MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of views... :(

SO yea, a new ground braking service needs arising... And few are doing so very quietly. Hoping Odemax will be on top of them all for us, yet we do still need Youtube like ot showcase and promote our content, some how linked to the paid channel such as Odemax could become.

I do have problems with Vimeo freezing on me all the time. And I'm afraid that I am one of those who tunes out right after the first or second freeze.

The question is this: If YOU were going to try to release a film as a web series for $1 an episode (which is what we plan to do in less than a year), what system would you use? What else is out there that looks viable? What would be the best approach?

Thanks for the input gentlemen!

Stephen

Not a fan of Vimeo.
I tried the PRO subscription TWICE and on both occasions I had major issues. I agree their 1080p quality looks better than YouTube, but that alone doesn't justify the cost imho. YouTube is FREE; something that Vimeo still has no answer to in their business model.
