Hi to all,

I’ve decided to write on all forums that I belong to and I think relate to this matter.

Recently, Vimeo have changed the way a video is loaded, instead of letting us, the filmmakers decide what resolution the audience will watch the video, they made the player more similar to Youtube, they call it “adaptive streaming”, like it’s some revolution , in fact this is going backwards in many ways on what Vimeo is to most pros.
Now they added resolutions like 360p and 240p, that’s amazing ain’t it?

I’ll try to be short here, this is for me and many others unacceptable, the all point of Vimeo is/was that I can decide what resolution people watch my videos, and I decide if I want them to wait 2-3 minutes for it to load or not.
In any case, I don’t think 240p or 360p should be an option on Vimeo at all!

Vimeo is about quality streaming, they should work hard so videos will load fast.
What I’m asking is:

1) Let me choose what resolution people will watch videos as default (like it was), if they wait to long, in any case they could always reduce resolution.

2) remove anything lower then 720p from my videos or any videos, maybe save this option as an option you can add in case you live in places with very very very bad connection.

3) let me disable this adaptive streaming all togehter.

How can you guys help? Please send emails to their support, I did, and in the beginning they ignored me a bit, but then they saw I CANCELLED my Plus membership and they send me an email saying they are reconsidering changing it.
Guys, This is a BIG DEAL, Vimeo at the moment is without alternatives, they are the only platform for professionals, if they will be some sort of Youtube we are in a bad situation.

There is a page they’ve made about it here: https://vimeo.com/forums/topic:278667 please, put as many comments as possible,
also please send vimeo costumer support as many emails as possible! they have a few other pages related to this, also please share this anywhere you feel fit.
It’s important they change there mind and let us professionals choose which resolution we want our videos to be displayed on!

Will be good to get everyone's input on this as well.

Hope people help out on this,
Oron.

I'm not sure if anyone even read or seen this thread, but would be great if people that use Vimeo and care about the service will send some emails.

I'll just update and say, that I discovered that you can't buffer the videos more then a few seconds now on Vimeo. so for example: lets say Vimeo choose you should watch a Video on 720p and you want to watch it 4K, and you internet connection is fast but still needs some buffering, now you can't buffer the video and can't watch it on 4K!

Every time I watch a video on Vimeo from one of the forums member the resolution jumps around till it settles on something, but Vimeo also don't show you what resolution you are currently watching, so only if you then choose manually you can ensure you're watching it on the right resolution, this of course if it will buffer...

Vimeo must have trouble. As they also started to delete source files. I used vimeo as an extra backup uploading 4k prores 444 stuff. I paid for the bandwidh and megabytes used ect. And I have about 2000 files on vimeo. Well not to long ago after a few years in use they decided to wipe all my source files from their server and just let me and my clients, or who ever want to watch or download, only see a h.264 hd hard compressed copy.

To me thats nuts. They could have asked me for more money and I would not have been in a situation to negotiate but instead they just delete my files....

It took my assistant more than half a year to gather all those files and upload them and it was for a reason i did not upload in 1080 h.264. I simply wanted the files stored in better quality and let my clients download in better quality.

First they took away "download original" for viewers and only had it availble for account holder. but now they take it away completly, as they do not keep the file, a few weeks or such after upload which really sucks if you ask me.

But its easy to see that their buisness model could have difficulty to hold water. The price per megabit for uploads and the way people view files etc does not add up as I see it. So what can they do? Well, they started to trim things down by deleting big files. Sad I think as for a while I could watch my files in 2,3 and even 4k from vimeo and it looked really good.

Hi BJorn,

I didn't hear about them deleting source files, they didn't delete mine, maybe they have a limit for the amount of uploads you can have?

I could honestly say that the only reason for me and many others payed for their membership was because we wanted to make sure people are watching our videos 1080p and we can control it, not they taken it away, and I'm trying to make people be aware of it and send as many emails as possible to them demanding them to bring it back.
