  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

someone please explain to me how I setup anamorphic 2x in for instance 6k, and have the same "screen space" on the red monitor, that i am used to with the Epic.?

in the manual it now says the the image is NOT cropped meaning I am recording the full 6k FF, and then have to unsqueeze, zoom/ crop in order to get the 2.40 anamorphic letterbox.

This obviously affects the viewing area on the red monitor and the HDSI out, meaning I am looking at quite a small image surrounded by Black (much smaller than the standard 2.40 aspect ratio letterbox).

I simply don't get it. why can't I just have 6k Ana as a nice preset like 6k HD or WS. maybe with the option of a 6k ana 1.3 / 2. Hopefully I am doing something wrong:)

Select 4K resolution with the aspect ratio 5:4... then enable 2x anamorphic mode. That's 6K ANA.

Yup - remember the 4k/5k/6k nomenclature is pixel width, not height.

the advanced dialog shows you a nice summary of pixel resolution and desqueezed size :)

I have seen some very smart people flummoxed by this though, so I guess a big obvious '2xAna' name for the list might help people. Difficult call though as it would disrupt the 'purity' of the current format selection system

If you're shooting anamorphic, choose ANA in your camera settings, when out putting to a monitor you'll have to use one with an anamorphic preset, like a Flanders or something similar. Otherwise you'll have to run the signal through a controller box like an HD-Link. Once you're in Redcine use ANA for viewing mode, but you'll have to change the output size in framing to x2 width.

really? you still get the full sensor height in that mode?

Nope - you get 3840 x 3072 record which desqueezes to 7680 x 3072

I can't seem to find a 6K ANA mode that gives me 3160 high - as the anamorphic modes under the advanced settings will make you chase your tail a bit.

I don't understand why we can't get 5:4 in the drop down under advanced with 6K as resolution? Thoughts?

Jason or Christopher (or Jarred) ... if you can tell me how to get 3160 high in anamorphic - I'll send cookies :)

Shoot 6K FF and crop in RedCineX later... Only draw back is looking at nearly a 4.0:1 aspect ratio in anamorphic mode. Though I ended up shooting a promo piece for Opel cars that was intended for a huge auto convention show custom LCD screen setup that spanned an entire stage and an aspect ratio of 3.8:1... They were concerned that Alexa didn't even have as many pixels as the screen displaying the images were... Well I had a solution for them!

Here's a short cutdown of some of that 3:8:1 material

That's what I did for promo - but I was seriously confused as to why they just don't crop to 5:4 and display the correct desqueeze for the most common format of anamorphic currently used. Anyway, maybe we will see it in a future firmware update. But I guarantee there will continue to much ANA confusion :)

But ... guys like me are also confused why I can't get a 16:9 6K HD that is full height - 3160.

6K HD mode is 3132 high ? Kinda strange to me to not have a full height 6K HD (1.78) mode - as opposed to shooting FF and cropping.

It's confusing to use terms like "6K ANA" when 2X anamorphic photography can't really use the full 6K width for a 2.40 image unsqueezed.

The ADVANCED MODE for shooting format is now very, very intuitive - set resolution, set aspect, select anamorphic squeeze (off, 1,3x,2x) and turn lookaround on or off. MUCH more intuitive than the names for various formats IMO.

It's just missing 5:4 in the dropdown.

I wish I could just use this mode to SAVE and NAME my own "format/resolutions".

The width would be 5617.78. :-)

Perfect whole numbers would be:
1. 5616x3159 <-- Non even number height
2. 5600x3150
3. 5584x3141 <-- Non even number height
4. 5568x3132

So 5600x3150 seems like a better choice.

here is my question from few weeks ago
we are shooting anamorphic with 2 epics and lomo squarefronts. One camera is on latest build and its more wider and streched on build 5 when you compare to 5K ana build 4.0.18.
whats the difference between these two build.now we back to previous build on both cameras and lenses works fine now.no vignette etc.
