  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

viewing Anamorphic in camera on Dragon is different than on Epic?:(

Thanks for all the replies.

I simply don't get it. but I will try to select 4k approach Christoffer suggested.:)

Looking at a 4:1 letterboxed image is not ideal - even though I agree it looks cool.

I have enough trouble already with post houses here to accept anamorphic with a "1 click" desqueeze approach, now with Dragon's approach to selecting
and post- cropping desqueezing they are going to have a heart attack, and frankly so am I... imagine the transcoding and how many things can go wrong...

It's confusing to use terms like "6K ANA" when 2X anamorphic photography can't really use the full 6K width for a 2.40 image unsqueezed.

you might be right technically, but i would say that it would significantly less confusing than how Anamorphic is selected now in Dragon, as you might be able to see by the replies:)

The ADVANCED MODE for shooting format is now very, very intuitive - set resolution, set aspect, select anamorphic squeeze (off, 1,3x,2x) and turn lookaround on or off. MUCH more intuitive than the names for various formats IMO.

It's just missing 5:4 in the dropdown.

I wish I could just use this mode to SAVE and NAME my own "format/resolutions".

I might be very intuitive for some, but we were two guys having worked with red cameras since the beginning, trying to get 1: 2.40 in the "unsqueezed" aspect ratio under 6k... and we had to give up...

I have 3 hours until we are shooting, and its affecting my sleep:)

Shoot 6K FF and crop in RedCineX later... Only draw back is looking at nearly a 4.0:1 aspect ratio in anamorphic mode. Though I ended up shooting a promo piece for Opel cars that was intended for a huge auto convention show custom LCD screen setup that spanned an entire stage and an aspect ratio of 3.8:1... They were concerned that Alexa didn't even have as many pixels as the screen displaying the images were... Well I had a solution for them!

Here's a short cutdown of some of that 3:8:1 material

That looks fantastic Chris!

I got very confused at the BSC show with this but luckily John Marchant was on hand to show me how to get the right settings. It seems with Dragon what we would have called 6k Ana is now 4k 5:4 2x, 5k Ana is now 3k 5:4 2x, and 4k Ana is 2k 5:4 2x. These also seem to give a 2.50:1 de-squeezed aspect ratio not a 2.40:1. I will double check when my Dragons arrive this week but I would like to see simplified settings with out having to go advanced. 4k Ana , 3k Ana , and 2k Ana at 2.40:1 in the main format choices would be good.

Well if you set the 2.40 guide in anamorphic mode on the cam and tell RC-X to use guides for cropping its pretty much still one click. Works well.

I would not say that it works "well" ... but you can get across the finish line if you don't loose your mind trying to figure it out first - or you are lucky enough to find this post :)

You have a dramatically compromised viewing situation that only causes confusion - and pisses off the operator - AND you have to record dramatically more media than you want. Not saying it isn't a cool option for some specialty project - like Christopher mentioned - but what we need is ....

a 5.4 option in the drop down in ADVANCED MODE under 6K and 5K like we have in 4K - so you could select 6K (resolution), 5.4 (record aspect), 2x (anamorphic squeeze), lookaround OFF - and you would be stylin. We should be able to get a full sensor height 6K anamorphic record mode that unsqueezes to a 2.40 aspect - and in order to do this - camera needs to record and unsqueeze a 5.4 full height crop at 2X.

We are adding a shortcut menu for the recommended anamoprhic modes. Hopefully this will lessen the stress a bit.

5:4 under 6K and 5K doesn't necessarily make sense since the largest width we can give is here ~3950, but we'll look into a full height presentation.

Matt - I'm still confused - using Christopher's method - you get 3840 x 3072 recording area (2x lens) = 1,1800,320

If we had full height - 6K with 5:4 .... wouldn't we get 3950 x 3160 recording area (2x lens) = 1,2482,000 pixels ???

I guess I would need to crop to 2.40 from the 2.50 and compare those pixels for DCI aspect release .... but unless I'm having a total brain fart - I don't understand why using the full height of the sensor for 2X anamorphic would not yield the highest resolution when shooting 2X anamorphic for 2.40 release - what am I'm missing?

Using 3160 as the full height will yield the greatest number of pixels. 5:4 just won't get you to a 6K width, it'll get you ~3950 pixels in width.

I understand the need and we're working on it now. =)

YES

but ... on the bright side ... after you de-squeeze and crop to scale for the exact aspect ratio of 4K DCI exhibition - you would be 7542 x 3160. So ... 7.5K width before scaling down to 4096 x 1716 for DCP :)

3792 x 3160 would be my preferred base resolution for a one-button 2x ana, if its possible. Seems likely to me, as the horizontal there is a multiple of 16

(assuming, maybe wrongly, that rounding to computer friendly numbers is a factor)

Glad I could help Nick. When I see bright guys like you and Jeroen Hendricks getting thrown by the UI, its time to move some buttons around. The UI suits me right now, but I'm not always a typical user :)

I'll second that. Though I don't mind the 5:4 concept either. Give a little more info on the .r3d file if you need to repo. I do believe that the 5:4 file IS cropped to that aspect ratio and not recording the full width... Can anyone confirm that officially?

Then I think that's a valuable setting, just as having a 1.2:1 aspect ratio option would be good as well. That way you have full sensor 6K and a post crop (or any aspect ratio up to 3.8:1), a true 2.40:1 crop with 4K 1.2:1 and a 2.50 crop with 5:4... Also have their place and shouldn't be difficult to enable in the next firmware.

Agreed 100%

Some people would probably like the record 6K full frame with a 2X anamorphic squeeze, crop later, but be able to desqueeze the viewfinder image independently (maybe that's already an option.)

Independent crop in Viewfinder or SDI out VS what is being recorded would be a huge deal. Not possible in current build as far as I know.
