  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Video - GTX 480 performance in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5

I'm running an X58A-UD3R with a 920 at 4ghz but only 6gb ram - and a GTX285 with 2gb. I get constant playing 4k at half res. I can stack 3 layers with CC and various other MPE effects and it plays fine - This is off a Raid 0 stack of 4 Samsung Spinpoint drives sata II (7200) set up in software raid using disc management in win 7 64bit. It is very simple to do, and very cheap at $60 for a single 500gb drive, gives just under 2TB of raid zero for $200 - not very secure, but fast, read rate is around 300gb/s.

I still can't get a single 4k to play real time at full res - my processor is maxxed out, but ram is still available - I imagine a 980 6 core running at 4GHz with 12gb ram would probably make this possible, and just for good luck add 4 Crucial SSD drives, raid 0 running at sata III 6Gbs !!

Paul,
Are you using Premiere CS5?
Have you installed: Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 5.0.1 update

If you are using the MPE, it seems that your
CPU shouldn't be maxed out. How is your CPU
with one stream of 4k full rez, no EFFECTs at all?

Nope i have the new revision. Ya lol i forgot about the 4gb sticks. Those are mighty expensive and i cant afford those right now. I just ordered 6 gb more to make 12 tho for my system. should help. i can play back one stream just fine at half rez with 3 cc as well BUT it starts jittering a few seconds in. maybe its the 6 gb ram, but the usage isnt spiking during playback. I believe its a problem with my harddrive. the clip is just running off a 7200rpm drive, no raid or anything. what kind of hard drive setup are u using at the moment.

Raid 5 config 3x 1TB WD Green Edition on the intel ICH raid.. I get reads variously from 140-250 MB/s ..

I'm beginning to think that the CPU has much to do with it.. and overclocks counts..

well, you could get another 12 GB of ram for about $370 in 4GB sticks so you'll have total of 18GB.. that's something in the middle.. you'll just sacrifice the FSB 1600MHz and get 1333..

i think my playback problem stems from the harddrives maxing out when it comes to video layers. but video effects seem to do nothing to affect playback. i can stack cc effects all day and it plays back perfectly. Without GPU acceleration it is horrid. I Was having trouble playing back 1 stream 1/2 res without any effects. So i overclocked my 930 to 3.4 and it played back perfectly. still hitting 100% tho on cpu usage. Im guna look into getting a solid raid setup.

I have CS5 5.0.1 update too. My CPU is 100% with a single stream 4K with no effects in a 4K project - with GTX 285 cuda enabled MPE enabled. In half res it all works fine.

Paul

well, I'm here to update.. playback works fine only at 1/4 res with CC on or two tracks no CC.. cpu usage goes from 40 to 70 percent.. at 1/2 res with no CC CPU gets maxed out and playbck goes stuttering..
Now it seems that this is all about the power of the CPU in the first place then the CUDA card comes next.. and maybe the app has to be optimized for that specific CUDA card..

playback is simply processor based, your GPU and MPE handles all the effects. So performance of R3D playback is all your discs, and your CPU. You put CC, picture in picture, blurs, whatever, gpu will handle all of that for you in real time. Calculations for simple playback and effects differ, that's why you can't simply have a gpu run your system without a processor. If you want more seemless playback your gonna need some octo core, or 12 core power, and fast ass raids.

they are talking about multiple layers, when you deal with layers, that counts as an "effect" in ways. that's the parameters in which MPE will kick in and your gpu will handle some of it, doesn't mean you won't need super fast raids, and powerful CPU to do a bulk of the work too. AVCHD is a joke compared to the amount of information that's inside of r3d. Whole different kind of ballpark, there is a reason why large finishing stations for a good while were the only systems that could give you real time performance for r3d. RR is a dedicated card just to debayer and playback r3d ONLY. All the demos adobe showed were on very powerful machines, expectations should really be scaled down when it comes to cutting r3d like it was dvcpro hd...

This is a very good way to explain it. Never thought of it that way. Regardless, before scarlet i need to hop on board with a good raid setup and i just maxed out my ram yesterday (unless i go to 4gb sticks) so im good to go i tink

Ya after getting 12 gb of ram the playback is still not great. so the next step is to get a raid setup going or get a better cpu but il live for now.

My new copy of Master Collection landed today... Sorry to here that 12GB was insufficient Jerry- Maybe someone from Red or Adobe can comment further...

well the ram isnt the problem i think. im only hittin 4 gb usage during playback. Its my harddrives and cpu. I just friggin build this computer lol and i already want a more powerful one. But hey i can playback color corrected red one 4.5k footage at half res realtime. What the heck am i complaining about. ppl pay 5 grand to playback 4.5 k footage realtime. Im only into this comp for 2.5 grand. and it can do ALOT more than half a red rocket card. haha

SSD normally isnt fast enough. And yup RED footage is a different world to AVCHD for post.

My SSD is 200+ MB/sec read. That's faster than my 5 disk Sata Raid 5.

I just built a PC with X58A-UD3R 6gig ram and a GTX 470.

I'm getting 2 layers of R3D at 1/2 res playing fine if they pull from 2 different drives. 1/4 res is probably where I'd live for editing. Still a helluvalot better than FCP. At least you can drop r3d's on the timeline, toss in some CC and go edit.

Seems to me one layer should play off any sata hard drive. They should all be at least 70MB/sec sustained read. REDCODE is typically 36MB/sec. So I don't see the drive being the bottleneck on one layer. Two layers... well now you're going to need some drive speed. 3 layers sounds like trouble.

I'll know more in a day or two but it does seem like a pretty good solution for viewing dailies and doing quick edits.

You gotta remember film guys edited movies at SD resolution forever. You don't need a big window to edit. Avoiding transcoding and proxies is a pretty big deal. Color Finesse seems like a pretty good color corrector. I know some other cool CC tools are on the way.

try to overclock it.. Themalright Venomous X + 2x 120mm fans and you're good to go.. maybe hitting 3.8GHz.. that's about 30% more CPU performance for the price of the cooler.. believe me it helps..

I may try that. Tom Wong looks to be right on. CPU seems to be a big deal.

I've done some more tests and the playback resolution really impacts CPU usage. On one layer I'm getting around 50%-65% CPU on 8 cores at 1/4 resolution. I get 100% at 1/2 rez. Adding CC or FX doesn't seem to add any CPU so the GPU is really doing it's job there. Guess I'll be editing at 1/8 probably. Still.. that's not really a problem.

Ram even at half rez is still on a couple gigs used. So I'm not sure what having 16 gigs really helps. Many layers? Many effects?

I did overclock it, my chip is actually watercooled :) but unfortunatley my chip is a bit of a lemon, anything over 3.5 (which i oced to) will bring temps to 80 celcius + but regardless, YES the ocing definitly helps no doubt. but its still an i7 930 at the end of the day.

more RAM helps with bigger projects and multi-app working enviroment AE-Pr-En.. it also helps you complicate your timeline.. how much do you have?

I didn't check the benchmarks for your water cooling system (the one I saw in the video) but usually those sealed water coolers aren't that efficient.. Venomous X is just a heat sink which you can add fans.. but it really out-perform most water coolers..

anyway, you should be fine with 3.5Ghz.. and believe me, don't upgrade to any 4-core CPU.. it won't give you more performance than what you have now with 3.5GHz.. wait for 6 core i7 970 or the i7 990X.. 990X is 6-core and will sport 3.46 GHz natively without turbo boost..
