I have the following system:

DaVinci Resolve Studio 12.5 (dongle)
SQL Database
2012 Mac Pro
12 Core 3.46
64 GB of ram
Titan X 12vram
10G HBA to 36 tb raid
pcie ssd cache drive
Decklink.

When i try and playback R3D dragon 6k footage there is a major lag in the audio. The audio plays way behind the video

I have tried:

Generating Optimized media
Trying to use smart cache
Tried proxy mode
Turned down red raw setting to low quality
Restarted

and still can't get the audio to play smooth with the video. Am I doing something weird? I recorded into the camera like I always do. If I bring this same footage into premiere it plays buttery smooth. I won't be able to edit this at all. Needing help.

Thoughts?

Monitoring in 6K or 4K or HD?

Are you trying to judge sound sync from the Edit page or in the Color page? In general, I think the sound sync is better in the Edit page, but there is a sync delay adjustment you can make in Project Settings (p. 102 in the 12.5 manual).

I figured it out. I made the rookie mistake of not changing playback resolution before importing my clips into the new project. I changed the timeline resolution before importing clips but not playback. I made a new project and adjusted that and all is well.

One problem I am still having however is premiere is running my red footage much much better than davinci is. I can have 6k red footage at Full in premiere and get smooth playback but have to turn it down to 1/2 and sometimes more in davinci. What is up with this?

Throw enough money and hardware at it, and you can get realtime playback in almost any resolution. Have you checked the system requirements from Blackmagic? My opinion is you're not gonna be able to do it with a 2012 mac. You can do it with a 2016 Linux machine with 8 GPUs and 128GB of RAM and a very large RAID 0 SSD drive. But not on Mac. You can get reasonable HD playback from 6K material, provided you don't slam it with a lot of nodes (particularly Blur or TNR or SNR nodes).

I see what you are saying if you have any color corrections/grades on the footage but I have to disagree with you on raw editing. I am editing 6k footage in a 1080p timeline. I fully expect it to bog down with nodes applied but I am talking about before I get to the color page it is slowing down. On the exact same system I can run 6k footage at full in Premiere and FCPX. So either I have something configured incorrectly, or Davinci is a BIG hog on resources and requires much more to do the same task.

It works for me on a Trashcan Mac, but I threw a lot of RAM at it, dual D700s GPUs, and I'm using very fast drives. What also helps a little bit is to use scopes outside the program like Scopebox or the Ultrascope. How do your drives rate in the BMD Speed Test?
