  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Viability of S16 instead of 2/3rd's?

I don't understand what you are referring to here. The Scarlet 2/3" sensor is listed by RED as 10.35 mm wide (as implied in David's original comment).

Terry,

But doesn't the Scarlet have a look around (can it be recorded into)? So what is the area of the sensor that is actually recorded?

BTW, this same logic would mean to get an S16 FoV + look around would require using a sensor larger than S16--or being able to disable the look around.

Again, I also want the camera out ASAP. So suggesting a bump in sensor size probably runs extremely counter to that very goal. But I've also read estimates for Scarlet's release as being more than a few months out and don't know how much is locked down, etc., so I thought I'd throw this out there.

Beyond the fact that you are suggesting a bump in sensor size, I am not understanding your point. Earlier you made a reference to an 8.80 mm sensor width, which AFAIK, is not correct. I was simply forwarding the sensor size info that I am aware of and noting, as David did, that such a small increase in sensor size would not change FOV very much. All other things being equal, "look around" area or not, it hardly seems worth the wait or the expense of the re-engineering to increase the sensor width just 2 mm. Might as well go to S35 - oh, wait, that's the Epic-S.:001_smile:

BTW - having a "look around" is a very nice feature but would you actually engineer a reduction in the recordable area of the sensor, effectively "dumbing down" the sensor, to have this feature?

Terry,

The real issue is what are the dimensions of the sensor area that is recorded. I don't know the answer to this. So if there is a significant difference between it and S16 is still an open ?.

The AF100 and the F3 have upped the ante in sensor size. And Ted called this an Alpha camera that has not been fully engineered yet.

I know amazing work can be done w/ true 2/3rd's, e.g. "Public Enemies" (which many people hated around here but I loved visually) and "Benjamin Button." B4 lens compatibility is a moot point, as this is a fixed lens camera and I think it's safe to assume that the interchangeable 2/3rd's Scarlet has been 86'd.

Again, I don't want the fixed Scarlet to take any longer than it already has. I sincerely mean that. But IF there is an appreciable difference in sensor size between its current recorded dimension and S16 and changing to a larger sensor is not that difficult, then I'd say do it. Of course those are very big if's, so I realize the thrust of this thread is probably not practical.

The thing is that the sensor has probably been locked down for at least a year and a half - and the hardware is probably very close to being done. I would imagine that this late in the game, the parts that Ted are referring is mostly the camera's firmware.

Jim said not three days ago that Scarlet Cinema (the interchangeable version) is still being made.

Well that probably 86's my thread.
