VFX Artists Recommendations

[Manfred Lopez]

I am looking to assemble a VFX budget for a project that involves a sequence of shots that include a meteor crashing into a mountain side causing huge forest damage. I was wondering if I could get recommendations for VFX artists or shops that are top notch and that hopefully are LA-based. Thanks.

If you can't get any satisfaction in L.A I highly recommend Bjorn. One of the best, honest and highly skilled artist. I saw his 2013 show reel and was left speechless with the quality of work he did for big companies.

Stargate Studios does good work:

Hydraulx has a good reputation:

As does Lola:

and Method:

and the top dog in town is Sony Pictures Imageworks:

All based in LA, all very competitive, all with top demo reels, all capable of doing something like a meteor crashing into a mountainside.

If you don't have a VFX producer on your show, you should read the book The Visual Effects Producer: Understanding the Art and Business of VFX. Very informative text that will give you an understanding of the VFX bidding process, how schedules work, how to estimate costs, and how to deal with cost overruns and delays.
