  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The second problem (vibration) turned out to be a little harder to tackle.
The reason for the vibration is the same reason that the noise levels were drastically reduced - the cycloidal drive. The way the drive works is by wobbling a couple flat disks that are made of steel and using that motion in conjunction with an output hub to create a gear reduction. The side effect is that the inertia of the disks cause vibration when the motor is ramped up to full speed on the input (3500 RPM). The solution I found was to change the material of the disks to aluminum instead of steel. The aluminum weighs approximately 3X less than the steel so the inertia at high speed is drastically reduced causing very little to no vibration. The aluminum disks are getting a plating called electroless nickel with PTFE (The coating is also used in aluminum bearings for aerospace applications). This coating ensures that the disks withstand the wear that is encountered over the life of the product. We are in the process of testing this solution thoroughly before resuming shipments in about a week.

Did the new aluminium disk work out for you Curt?

Rich,

Talking to him made me think that he is there and working. He told me that my order will probably ship the 18-th of November.
Erfort Kuke

Tomorrow, is the 18th. Maybe? :)

Looks like the aluminum parts are working well. We are having another batch plated which we are receiving today. I'm going to assemble several units and send them out to a few customers. Firmware is very close - I'm putting the upgrade instructions together and cleaning up my documentation. I expect to have it ready for release this weekend.

You should check with Erik at Birger Engineering on that. Shoot him an email or give a phone call. There are differences in the cables and I don't know which (possibly both?) that you would need.

p

The firmware is also different between the Birger and Viewfactor Imperos.

If the aluminium parts gets thumbs up by the first customers receiving it and the firmware is finalized. Are there any more hurdles left or are you ready to ship?

Only hurdles left are putting a bunch of them together and finalizing this firmware update. I'm adding one last chunk of code that will allow us to upgrade the Inclino firmware in the field (current firmware only allows us to upgrade the imperos themselves). Up until now we've been having people send the motors back to us if the code has to be updated... that costs a lot in both time and shipping. I had to figure out an elegant way to buffer the motors firmware image in flash on the impero then send it to the motor's over the CAN bus (not fun). Looks like it will all work but I want to send the update to a few local guys with instructions to make sure its easy to follow and doesn't brick anything.

We just got the final parts back from plating yesterday afternoon. They look amazingly nice and the tolerances are spot on. It pays to make parts yourself I guess. I'm putting several units together now along with upgraded Imperos and we are shipping them out tomorrow so we don't rush anything and make mistakes. On the couple units that I assembled with the new parts the vibration was much less than before, at least by a factor of 3 or 4. We are going to run all of the internal parts over the next week while allowing those individuals that receive these units to give us plenty of feedback from the field. I'll keep updating every couple days.... if I forget just bump the thread and I'll let you know where things stand.

Curt, the parts look beautiful! I can't wait to have an Impero-Inclino!

I haven't order them yet but i will once you ship all the backorders. How long do you think that would take now that the product is finalized?

beauty....

Expecting to be one of the first ones to get new motors and fixed Impero, but haven't received any tracking-numbers yet.

Can I buy a wireless unit with TX and RX yet from Curt and Gang?

Curt please send me an email and let me know status as I need a unit and would like to know if you are ready to ship:

obin@dv3productions.com

I don't watch this thread much so an email would be fantastic with status of shipping update.

I wont go silent on you guys anymore. Tony... you're the first one getting motors these new parts. I will have a tracking number to you VERY soon.
