Ketch,
I would really like for the opportunity to meet you and possibly working with you, that is if you decide Vancouver, BC.
Both Kitsilano and Point Grey area is beautiful, but of course the North shore is also. Whatever you decide.
Hi Ketch,
I too am in Vancouver. If you need any help, let me know. You'll love it here besides a few 'known' areas but they are cleaning those places up supposedly.
Thanks,
Norm
Ketch, if you like the rain it sounds like it will be heavenly for you. It truly is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been and I'm sure it will be a good place for you to regain your health.
Can any of you Vancouverites shed some light on Lionsgate? When I was living there, it was suggested that, though Van is the company's original home, now it's sort of just a mail drop office or something. Haven't their HQ and main operations moved to New Mexico or LA? I lived in Van while attending film school, so I didn't have much to do with major studios and distributors other than trying to tour them when they were feeling generous. As a huge horror fan, I thought I was in a great place to try and intern for LG, but it seemed at the time that they weren't really active in Vancouver. Am I totally off the mark with this thinking?
Ketch, you may want to look into this if you're really interested in trying to contact them. It might be easier to get to Cali or NM to try and get a meeting before you head north.
There's not many places in the world where you can ski 10" of fresh powder (Grouse Mountain) while looking out over your entire city. While you're skiing that sugar powder, you can also see dozens if not hundreds of sailboats below on a good day. (I know you won't ski Ketch, but you get the same view from the coffee shop!)
For those of us who live here, the rain defines us. It's not "rain" like it is in the rest of the world, it's rain like Seattle rain......it's who we are (in the winter time at least).
............and then there's summer, same scenery but all at 75 degrees, blue sky, and fresh air.
And filmmaking, filmmaking, and more filmmaking.
But what I have heard no one say here (well actually write) is about the Canadian Hot-ties
ciao
Ketch, there are two chains of restaurants here that you will want to check out. One is called 'Cactus Club' and the other is 'Earl's'. I really like their hiring criteria, you'll think you walked into a modelling agency.
Except it is like some bizarro world modelling agency where they are actually friendly even if you aren't rich, famous or can do something for their career.
The food is not too bad there either.
I am up north in the interior right now but might be back south when (if) you get into Vancouver in the beginning of March. I'll buy you lunch at an Earl's or Cactus Club if we are both there at the same time.
If it were for work, I'd move to Los Angeles or any number of other cities but the only places I've found so far were I'd go just to live there would be Vancouver or Florance.
Now if I were given the opportunity to found a city off the planet then I would be gone in a second... but here on earth, Vancouver is pretty nice.
I don't like Rain, how did you get that impression? I LOVE rain
On top the doc say to stay away from direct sun light as much as possible, so I think that Vancouver will be great for that.
You may love the rain now... but months of cold wet darkness can be tougher than expected. It helps if you have an indoor hobby; if you're going to be writing most of the time, that will be a good distraction to get you through the winter dreariness. Be careful in the winter when you go outside, because the air is cold and moist coming off the ocean. It can be hard on the lungs unless you stay bundled up and drink hot liquids. The summers though, are usually pretty awesome and make up for the wet winters. The green in the foliage really pops when the sun comes out.
One other thing... if you start to get lazy or depressed during the dark periods, it's probably Seasonal Affective Disorder setting in. Try to find sunlight somewhere to fend it off; Vancouver Island might be your best bet. Also, get some Vitamin D3 into your diet (via pills or food) because you won't get enough direct sunlight to naturally produce the amount your body needs.
It's a fantastic area in general though. Different from desert land, that's for sure. Though if you do miss the desert, you can find one a day's drive away in Eastern Washington.
North American electronics are all the same, Ketch-o-Man!
No worries there...
I've lived in Vancouver now for almost 2 years, and it will be almost impossible to get me to move anywhere else.
Hi there,
Here is a bit of Vancouver from my apartment balcony, this is looking NW towards the city from Burnaby about 20 minutes drive from the downtown core, as attached. If you are looking for a beach lifestyle away from the city, look at White Rock, Victoria, or for the really adventurous the Gulf Islands. Stay away from Earls, my Iphone was stolen there.
Vancouver is a wonderful place. Just wrapped up a feature release and will be doing some experimental work using our red for next feature.
Norm I should be back by 11th Mar
