  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any word on the resolution and frame rates for internal ProRes on the V-Raptor? I'd love to snag a camera, but without the DSMC2 style of compression, file sizes become a pretty huge problem for a lot of my work. But a nice 4K ProRes could fix that if we can get 422, HQ, etc at 120fps in 4k at the full-frame of the sensor. And 2k downsampled from 8k would also be amazing.

I believe, and this is only theory talk running the numbers, that 4K 120fps in ProRes 4444 is possible considering the maximum data rates. Beyond that I think would be tricky for 4K encoding. But 4K 240 ProRes 422 HQ might also be "possible", but that's over 900MB/s and I think V-Raptor might top out around 800MB/s, at least in theory.

However, it's unknown if the hardware can support that at the moment on the encoding level. We only have been told ProRes is coming basically.

That wouldn't be in a "dual record" situation though, that would have to be dedicated ProRes only recording because the data rate would be filled up big time. At that point I would just consider filming in REDCODE RAW, but I understand people want it for sure.

It would be awesome if we have the ability to do that at those frame rates. That would be nuts.

That said, something to keep in mind that for 120fps 4K ProRes 4444 versus 8K REDCODE RAW LQ would be a similar data rate.

Have you heard if dual record is definitely on the cards? 1080p proxies was a game changer for me, would hate to give that up.

Totally. Thanks for the thoughts, Phil.

I’m mostly interested in being able to use the full sensor for projects that don’t want 8K or don’t have a budget for the extra storage space. So normal 4k ProRes 422 at 24fps would be the go-to there. But would definitely be nice to have a quick 96-120fps if need be. If I was going to shoot 4444, I’d just go with 8K LQ.

would be a shame to have such a powerful camera and not be able to use the full sensor on lower budget shoots.

I know this was mentioned somewhere, I believe in the Q&A. Yes, there will be dual-record when ProRes arrives.
