V-Mount Battery Drain when Camera is off.

Hi all,

I fired my camera up this morning to test out and format a new cfast card. I took the battery fresh off of the charger and put it on the camera. It was on for maybe 15 minutes. I turned the camera off and left the battery on the cam.

when I arrived home today the battery was dead to the bone. The charge indicator lights wouldn’t even illuminate one bar.


I have the Core battery plate Does this thing drain batteries when off? I had nothing else plugged into the plate/battery. It was just mounted on the camera.

I’ve killed two Swit 98 vlocks by leaving them on my Epic Dragon for more than a few days and they ran flat, now I remind myself to remove after shooting otherwise they’ll be paperweights. Not sure if they can be re-celled or revived, thought there’d be some protection in the circuitry with Epic’s, thought it’d be fixed by now with Komodo though?

The core plate definitely has a perceptible draw - more than I'm used to seeing from a plate. I'm looking at the one from Mutiny io which has an actual off switch for these types of situations where I'm shooting doc/guerilla and want my rig ready to go.

Same thing happens with my Tilta v-mount plate. Remember that these are add-ons; the Komodo body is designed to work with Canon batteries.
I have the Mutiny plate, which does indeed have the hard “off” switch. (Also kills power to accessories, so you can leave monitor/fiz/etc. plugged in without draining the battery.) It’s great—I only wish it allowed you to plug in house power for hotswapping.

the mutiny plate looks awesome. May need to shell out for that soon.

you expect some drain over time, but I was shocked that happened over the course of just a few hours. It’s like the camera was on.
