I looked around for info, but I don't seem to find the proper answer.
I am looking into the different ways to power the camera. I have an Epic Dragon.

I tried and understand well functionality for the redvolts and redvolts XL.
I am looking for a cable-less solution that gives me a bit more battery time.

I am confused on the options for the V-mount and how it works with other batteries.
If I get the module adapter (or +1) and quick plate back from RED, can I use other V-mount batteries on it? Or can I only use bricks? I'd love to be able to have <100WH V-mounts for when I travel and bricks or similar for when I am here.

Also, can I charge other batteries on the RED brick charger?

when you say cable-less.. there is no adapter for red epic that is cable-less.. the switronix fits onto the back of the epic and then plugs into the rear of the camera to provide power, you will need a charger to charge your v-mount batteries

The RED brick solution is cable-less. Brick attached to RED quick plate attached to module.
Can I use other batteries with that configuration (switronix)? And charging them with the RED brick charger?

Thanks Matthew. I guess I am really unclear on why so many people use different backplates with cables, rather than the RED solution. Unless you need AB batteries.

Probably because a RED camera was not their first camera.

Both the V lock and Anton Bauer mounts have been standards in the industry far longer than RED's have been on the market. If you have been in this business for more than a few years, you likely own batteries, chargers and other power accessories. Why sell it off - or invest in another system - especially when your current holdings are still fully functional?

It does make a lot of sense that a RED designed battery system would take advantage of their own designed and manufactured cameras.

Have not seen folks powering up their ARRI, Canon, SONY or Panasonic cameras with a RED battery solution - nor would I expect to see that anytime soon.

Also, the cable less quick plate is a somewhat recent item to hit the RED store.

So, a lot of people invested into other battery plates, and a lot of them from other companies, and didn't see the need to reinvest in a new plate.

Also I don't have V-Locks so I'm not positive, but I don't think all V-Locks will charge on red chargers but pretty much all of them will power the camera (assuming it can put out enough charge).

yeah a lot of people use AB gold mounts, like most rental houses, its just always have been a standard, most alexa pkgs use AB gold mounts.
i would prefer that mount on a cable-less system from red so i can use batteries that are rented with the A camera, but there is an adapter, just adds size.
so, might be getting at least 3 V-mount, i like the ones at PAQ mainly because i like their travel linking charging system, i just wish i could find a US dealer incase something goes wrong with them.

Element Technica just released a cable less gold mount plate for epics and weapons.

I use a Switronix JetPack JP-V-EPIC with Power-U 190Wh v-mount batteries.

oh, no that doesnt look good to me, they must be coming out with one especially for weapon and raven, no adapter

Here's a link to the Element Technica V-Lock Plate I'm using for Weapon:

And here's the G-Lock (Anton Bauer Gold Mount):

The only difference between the one in the picture and the one I have is it now has a D-Top on the top of the Module. At the moment I attach this either to the camera body directly or through the Base Expander.

They also have a Mini Side Plate with a whole lot of holes to mount goodies too if you are rigging for say a crane or something:

I'm sure there's more stuff on the way as well.

oh thats better, thanks phil.

though i guess it only makes sense if you are really going gold mount, because 900 plus 1750 is a lot more then what the v-lock i/o will go for, i think.
i guess ill see what the price and size difference is btwn v-lock i/o expander and v-gold mount adapter...
