V-Lock Expander vs Base Expander + V-Lock Module

I noticed that even the Base package on the new configurator include the Base Expander + V-Lock Module rather than simply the V-Lock Expander.

Does the V-Lock Expander lack some capability the Base Expander has? Other than not being able to attach modules to it (and can you not get around that by making the V-Lock Expander your "last" module? or does your Expander have to come first?)?

There needs to be some clarity on "modules".

There are "I/O" modules"
There are "battery modules"
There is ONE module that combines BOTH - that is V-Lock Expander

You can NOT stack or combine I/O modules. You CAN put different battery module onto I/O modules (except the V-Lock Expander which is both an I/O module and a battery module".

The V Lock Expander locks you in to that battery plate. If you use a DSMC2 Base Expander - you can use whatever DSMC2 battery module/plate option you like.

There is NO MODULE that can use between the camera brain and V-Lock Expander. But if you do know you will always be V-Mount and the Base Expander gives you the I/O you want - it is the cheapest way to have basic I/O + V-Mount.

But if you want something like Mark's OMOD down the line but also want the ability to have a smaller IO set up when needed get the IO module + the Battery Module so that you don't need to buy another battery module for when you put the OMOD on, or the REDVolt expander, etc.

The Base I/O expander is the most versatile expander. The option to add a v-lock, or good-mount is pretty cool. For me, I am using the same v-mount plate I used from my epic bolted onto back rails, then powered through a lemo.

That's a *really* good point. the combo of base + v-mount is $350 ish more expensive than the v-mount i/o, but it saves you buying another $600 battery plate if you want the OMOD as an option.

I think the vmount module also have different functions for sync and triggering. The base io needs a powered trigger where as the v mount only needs a closure if i remember correctly.

So, Movcam has a hot swap plate that provides temporary power. It sits between the brain and a V-lock expander. So in that case you are going Brain+battery+I/0+battery. I assume that works or they wouldn't be creating that product.

They draw power for the top plate from the D-tap on top of their hot swap plate. I'm assuming they must be getting power passed through to the D-tap on the hot swap plate from the V-lock battery, and that the V-lock battery charges the hot swap plate continuously.

Anyone have information on this? I can't seem to find a source to call or purchase.

Also just to be clear the Red I/O modules aren't *required* (a la the old Module Adapter or +1 Module), right? If I wanted to skip it entirely and get an OMOD XLR I could do that?

You actually can not use a RED I/O module with the OMOD, you are required to skip it if you want the OMOD
