  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Using Impero and Birger

Bottom port - Mount to camera.
Middle port - Mount to Impero in wired mode (make sure Impero power switch is OFF)
Top port - unused, I think original thinking was to use the to drive lens motor for zoom

Get all firmware up to date, make sure in BEI software you enable all protocols (should be default).

Make sure Remote S4/i is active in Red menus as well as Display lens data.

Boot camera without lens attached.

Make sure /i cable is connected to Birger mount inside. If you don't have the connector, you need to update your mount with Birger to v45 version.

Need a bit of help updating the software. . .

Need a bit of help updating the software. . .

Okay, guys, I just downloaded the Birger interface software, and fired it up, but I'm stuck in an infinite loop somehow. Comes up with a message telling me that if I had submitted a lens report to resubmit it. There is an "ok" button one can click, but nothing happens. It is non-functional. Worse, even trying to quit the program doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Thanks for the info Paul.

So is there no operational manual for the Birger mount? I found the Impero notes but that's all.

Once I did the initial physical installation of the Birger mount is has stayed on the camera. But I would still like to have installation instructions that are not labeled "preliminary". I got more information from watching Jay A. Kelley's video to install and collimate the mount but have lost track of them.

I plan on upgrading my RED to build 30 and the Birger/Impero to the latest software/firmware. I'll report back if I find anything useful.

Stephen, can you report back on the versions you are using? RED, Birger, OS?

I'm giving up until I can talk to Erik next week.

I finally got the BEI program to work, but it can't find the Birger. Tried several times, and no luck. It may be something very simple, or it may be something complex. Given that it is my camera, I'm guessing it is something complex.

:-(

Stephen

Stephen, did you make sure it is paired with your computer?

If your using a Mac open Bluetooth preferences and see if shows up there. It should be listed on the left.

Ah, Robert. . . I did not do that, and Erik had specifically told me that, too.

Oh, my aged brain.

:-(

This advanced technology nonsense is going to be the death of me.

I am looking for explanation on the Imperio configuration menus.
The menu that you invoke by pressing FN button for 5 seconds.
Anybody knows where to find it?

Andrew

Lauri, Birger files shows only definition of each key on Imperio controller/transmitter but it just mentions that by pressing FN button for 5 sec you will be switched to config menu mode that allows you to configure different aspects of Imperio.

It doesn't explain the menu itself.
I even downloaded pdf file from View Factor website about Imperio and nothing in this file as well. Just bit better explanation of the operation of Imperio controller.

This is covered in depth on pages 9-11:

VF and Birger versions of the Impero software have very different behaviors, beyond the most basic functionality. The VF manual isn't going to be that helpful for Birger users... though it does have much prettier pictures.

Thanks! Erik, I missed this last pages when I was scrolling down, thinking that it is not finished section.

I miss the View Factor version behaviour that gives you indication via direction button LED and Sync light when you are back on the same spot when returning to the bus that you were using before.

Bus=axis=channel

Like when you switch from Z to I and back you know right away how to turn the knob and when the knob is just in the same place as I left it right before switching the bus.

The sync light is blinking once you have knob on the same spot when you left it and DIR lights show you which way to turn to go where you left the bus before switching.
I just love this feature.

Now when I pull the focus and switch to Iris to correct the aperture and I switch back to focus, as soon as I touch the knob my focus is off and I have out of focus moment till I turn the knob back to the marked position.

I know there is a monitor based mode (FN menu REC button) but then I can’t use marks on the ring.

I would leave the monitor pulled focus mode as it is but the default mode (marks on the ring) I will modify to force switching bus with two presses of the same bus button.

One press to disengage the current bus but do not engage the new bus. Second press on the same bus button will engage this bus.

This will give me a chance to move the knob back to the marked position on the ring in the time when I press first time and I didn’t press second time yet on the same bus button.

If you could implement this need for dual press of axis (bus) button each time you want to switch the axis would be just marvellous!

Would love to have it implemented on the mount firmware (or as you call it lens database) version 20C and 20D.

I ask for 20C (previous version) because it works perfect with older versions of REDs firmware.

20D works perfect only with new version of RED firmware.

Hi All,

Sorry to bump this thread up 3 years down the line… I have red the 14 pages without finding the answer of my problem.

I've just got my Red One Not MX, 31.6.16 with Birger mount + Impero. Works perfectly.
Only problem is I don't have any data on my LCD.

I have uploaded the Birger app, upgraded the mount and the impero to the last versions.
Then when I want to check all the boxes in the 3rd party protocol, the cases are not enabled.
It says : "This features not enabled yet"

Do I miss something ?
Does anyone have had the same problem before ?

Thanks !
Seb.

Hi Sebastien Is it possible that the data cable from the Birger to the Red one body is not connected?
When I had this set up I left it unconnected and didn't use the data on screen as it led to problems ( can't remember exactly what they were though).
I just got used to counting the clicks to close the aperture. good luck

Hi Marcus. Thanks for your reply.

Not sure about this cable. I just bought the camera and I didn't do it myself.
I don't think I'm going to go through this now.
Before I'd like to see if there are other replies.

But the fact that I can't access to the 3rd party protocol in the Birger App looks weird since nobody has this problem before in those 14 pages and this doesn't depends on this cable if I understand well the Birger process.

Best,
Seb.

The data that appears on the Red one monitor passes through a cable from the back of the Birger mount into the Red One. It was this connection that was the cause of the rift between Red and Birger. If you remove the Birger mount from the front of the camera you will be able to check if the white and red cable connects the back of the Birger mount to the body of the Red One. There are videos online somewhere showing how to do this. Or this http://www.birger.com/pdf/assembly_instructions_large.pdf
Also I'd guess that Red One software version is not compatible with the older Birger software.

Ok Marcus.
It sounds like I'm going to investigate this way. I'll let you know the results.
Thanks for your help.
