  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Used RED One or BMCC 2.5k

Right back at you, and thank you.

I'd like to qualify my harshness though. What I really try to get across here is not snobbishness against beginners or people working with low budgets - I'm trying to encourage high standards and appreciation for the finer points of image making. I realize that sometimes budget means you can't use the best tools, but you should still realize what the differences are, appreciate them. No matter what the budget, you can still make the most of it through thought and planning and loving care, no matter what you can still aim high.

+1

a good carpenter uses basic tools to get the job done but will appreciate what a better tool can potentially accomplish.

If you have your heart set on the Blackmagic then why not just wait for the production camera due to come out soon? That should be in your budget. If you are a student honing in your craft then just keep using the BMCC and spend the extra cash on gears to help you make better shots (3 axis gimbal wink wink etc) :)

For student work this cam will be amazing. But for pro work it's not so amazing. Highlights seem to show harsh clipping, and once again I sense a lacking OLPF which makes the horrible makeup in this video look even worse. F3 in many ways gives a nicer image, let alone a Red One MX.

Opposite opinion of this director who apparently put the A Cam RedOne MX with the B Cam BM 4K.
Considering RedOne was 2007 and it's now 2014..long time in camera years..maybe it shouldn't be a surprise.

...but i also arranged with my good friends Tanya and Lance from The Storyboard to bring the camera onto a music video they were working on with me as 2nd Unit DP. Kent Belcher was the main DP for this shoot and a Red MX was to serve as 'A Cam' with me operating the 4K as 'B Cam'. After the first couple of shots of the shoot, Kent and Tarn (Director) were loving the 4K(BM) and it basically became 'A Cam'. :-D The shots i've included in this video are random clips i picked myself and don't reflect the edit or final video (still in progress as i write this). What was interesting to me is that this was a night shoot and i had the camera set at ASA400 (had already tested at night with 800 which is at the end of this video) and the red was at 1200 yet Kent and I were both surprised the Blackmagic looked brighter on the monitors!

So some director, somewhere, whom I don't even know and who's work is not exactly stellar prefers something, and so therefore I must agree that it is better? How does that logic work!? I know directors who swear that a 5D is better than Alexa and "more filmic" It means nothing. Some directors are idiots who got their jobs not really because of skill of any kind.

Besides, anyone can just look at the footage and see the clipped highlights and harsh fall-off for themselves. It's not like you have to take my word for it. MX footage when shot and developed properly never looks like this. Maybe the director loves a harsh video-like look. That's his problem. He's not exactly JJ Abrams (neither am I, but again, you can just watch the video and see what I am talking about, it's not really a personal opinion.)

An F35 is from, if I am not mistaken, 2006. It still beats many newer cameras in some ways. Age is not the whole story. A $4K cam is likely using parts that got rejected form someone else QC process. The Red was built to be a $25 000 camera.

Look, a fully configured Red One is a beast. It will require heavier tripods, baseplates, rails, etc. Not to mention some serious accessories.
At this stage of the game the BM is more than enough for you. It is a step above most conventional DSLR's and wont break the bank or your back.
The choice should be obvious at this point.
