  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

usb 3.0, the future with drives. What are your plans?

Thanks guys, if production ever actually talks to me prior to purchasing drives I'll push for the dual interface Rugged Drives. I just wish USB 3.0 could handle 2 streams of data without choking itself to death, but it's still a huge improvement over the Firewire 800 drives that are still making it onto set.

I cringe!

I have to include in all my spec requests in large bold print that all drives given to me must be USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt and 7200rpm... and to this day I get people complaining about it. It's one thing if you want to use Firewire800 or USB 2.0. However, it's not fair to hold others down to that level just to save a few bucks.

So frustrating!

I find USB3.0 to be adequate when dumping REDmags to SSD (it taps out the cards' 200-250mb/s), but that might change with MiniMags because of their SATA3/6Gbps support. 7200rpm drives (bus powered or otherwise) max out at around 100mb/s, so I don't see why everyone would piss all over USB3 for that… Or is there something I'm missing?

The only real issue I see with USB 3 is compatibility - meaning stuff may or may not actually work well if at all - and that has largely gone away at this point.

I'm getting 10GB per minute with USB 3.0 offloading form Red Station, slightly faster when going to SSD. However, my hunch is that the real bottleneck is the Redmag, and not the SSD/HDD or USB 3.0 for that matter...

I know it's been said/ requested a million times already, but it would be great if Red Station offered Thunderbolt. Especially with Dragon on the way...

I'm sure they will.

It will come with TB2 since mass-manufacturing of TB hardware begins with that. Monitors, HDDs, and other things will be coming to market with TB2.

It's nice to see that PC Mobo makers are starting to include TB2 ports. In the past few months, Gigabyte and Asus announced TB2 motherboards, hopefully with more makers to follow (if for no other reason, they need to match the TB2 specs of their competitors or risk the scorn of the power-nerds!). The adoption of TB2 into the more mainstream PC market should help it become widespread, increasing demand for peripherals that support the TB2 standard.

I just hope there's some TB improvements for Linux in the next year. Intel is giving a lot of love to Linux development lately to drive sales of their CPU/GPU hardware and not having basic Thunderbolt 2 support up and running for Linux this year would be a big step backwards for them.

Langer, what do you mean by USB3 compatibility concerns -- isn't USB3 more compatible than most interfaces?

I, too, am getting ~10GB/minute (~200megs/second) offload from regular REDmags; that's their limit since they're SATA2/3Gbps (which has a theoretical max of 375mb/s, but realistically tops out closer to 250mb/s), which is also why I am content with USB3 (peaks around that point as well.) Bare in mind, my concerns are more about in the field dumping (which is where I want the speed.)

How much power does TB and TB2 support? Are there any bus-powered TB raid enclosures?
